Markiplier Net Worth: Early Life and Education

Markiplier’s real name is Mark Edward Fischbach. He was born on June 28, 1989, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His parents are Cliffton Fischbach, a German-American military officer, and Sunok Frank, who originates from South Korea. His maternal family history has been explored in a documentary titled Markiplier from North Korea, released in 2022.

When Fischback was only a baby, his family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. A few years later, his parents divorced. Cliffton Fischback, his father, died in 2008.

As for his education, Fischbach studied at Milford High School, where he graduated in 2007. At the school, he was a member of the marching band and played the trumpet.

He subsequently enrolled at the University of Cincinnati to study Biomedical Engineering. He didn’t obtain his degree though, since he dropped out of college to pursue a YouTube career when he was only two semesters away from graduating.

Personal Life

Fischbach has an older brother, Tom, who created the webcomic Twokinds. He is currently dating his long-term girlfriend, graphic artist Amy Nelson, famously known as Peebles.

In 2018, Fischbach’s step-niece Miranda Cracraft died in a car accident. She was 19 years old. To cover the funeral costs, Fischbach created a GoFundMe campaign and raised $79,000. He has since taken part in many charity fundraisers. That same year, he put his Tasteful Nudes charity calendar on sale for two days and raised $500,000 for the Cancer Research Institute.

Fischbach’s youth was challenging. His father passed away, he was laid off from his job in 2012, and had to move out of his mother’s house after she kicked him out. He was also hospitalized because of an adrenal tumor and had an emergency appendectomy, all of which put him in major debt. He shared about that time:

It was a series of unfortunate events. As I was recovering, I was so desperate to have something that was under my control.

This prompted him to focus on creating gaming content. He spent some time emulating and learning from other gaming creators. Soon enough, he started posting content himself, using his online pseudonym Markiplier. The rest is history.

Beginnings on YouTube

Mark Edward Fischbach registered his first YouTube channel in March 2012, planning to upload action videos and sketch comedy videos. He named it Markiplier as a combination of his name Mark and the word multiplier. This name has stuck with him since even though, at one point, Fischback shared that it was a “really dumb name”.

Despite his initial plans, Fischback eventually decided to do gaming videos. His first series on YouTube was a Let’s Play of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Thanks to his unique style and charisma, Markiplier’s YouTube channel reached over 94,000 subscribers within the first year.

Even though he had more than a thousand subscribers, which was the requirement to be able to earn under YouTube’s AdSense program at the time, he couldn’t monetize his videos. This forced him to move his Markiplier channel in the April, which was originally named “markiplierGame”.

At around this time, Fischbach dropped out of school to focus entirely on his online career. In 2014, he also moved to Los Angeles to pursue his YouTube career.

Markiplier started posting action videos and comedy sketches, but his transition to video game content is what made him a major name on the YouTube platform. By 2015, he was already so popular that he was asked to co-host the South by Southwest Gaming Awards with Janet Varney. That same year, he was also featured in YouTube Rewind and ranked sixth in the list of twenty most influential celebrities among teenagers in the US.

In September, Markiplier and Jenna Mae appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! after Kimmel received backlash for the jokes he made about Let’s Play videos, which have been the cornerstone of Markiplier’s success.

Collaborative YouTube Channels

In 2015, Fischbach lived with fellow Youtuber Daniel Kyre, who attempted suicide in his room in September. He was hospitalized and taken off life support only two days later. Since Markiplier, Kyre, and Ryan Magee ran a joint YouTube channel called Cyndago at the time, the channel disbanded and Fischback decided to take a break from YouTube for a month.

In November 2019, Fischbach launched a new collaborative YouTube channel with fellow YouTuber Ethan Nestor-Darling. The popular YouTube stars named their channel Unus Annus, which translates as “one year” in Latin.

The channel was a major success. It gained a million subscribers in its first 5 days and reached 4.56 million right before it was deleted. The channel was deleted by Fischbach and Nestor as planned after a whole year. The last post was a final 12-hour livestream that peaked at 1.5+ million viewers.

Becoming One of YouTube’s Highest-Paid Creators

On October 5, 2012, Fischbach reached 10 million subscribers on his YouTube channel. By November, he was approached by the talent agency William Morris Endeavor, known as WME, and signed with them.

Markiplier’s first project with WME was the You’re Welcome Tour in Spring 2017 in which he and four other YouTube creators – Barnes, Tyler Schied, Muyskerm, and Ethan Nestor – performed 31 shows across Europe and the US. The tour was a major success and took five months to plan. In it, Markiplier included improv, comedy, and musical elements, which marked an expansion in his career in the entertainment industry.

In January 2018, Markiplier started producing exclusive content for Twitch. He did this under a deal with Disney Digital Network, though the details of the deal haven’t been disclosed to the public.

By March, Markiplier’s YouTube channel reached 20 million subscribers. He put his career on hold for a month to mourn his step-niece but returned to the scene with new YouTube videos soon after.

In October 2019, A Heist with Markiplier, an interactive special, was released as Fischbach’s first YouTube Original. The special was produced by Fischbach himself in collaboration with Rooster Teeth. It followed two burglars, presenting the viewers with 31 possible endings. This project was inspired by Fischbach’s similar work with A Date with Markiplier, which he had released two years before.

In 2022, the two-part In Space with Markiplier was produced by Rooster Teeth and Fischbach as the content creator’s second interactive YouTube Original. The interactive was nominated for Outstanding Interactive Media at the Children’s and Family Emmys Awards.

As of November 2024, Markiplier’s YouTube channel has 37.1 million subscribers. This is his main channel, which is focused on gaming, vlogs, and comedy. It’s where he’s built his biggest following with Let’s Plays and series like Five Nights at Freddy’s. He also has had his collaborative channels.

The most popular videos on the channel are:

  • MEOW with 375 million views
  • WOOF with 154 million views
  • WARNING: SCARIEST GAME IN YEARS / Five Nights at Freddy’s – Part 1 with 121 million views
  • MOO with 116 million views
  • Five Nights at Freddy’s ANIMATED with 73 million views

Mark Fischbach’s Net Worth: Career Earnings

In 2024, Markiplier is the third highest-earning personality on YouTube. Before 2021, he reportedly earned between $10 million and $20 million a year from social media and other sources. Here’s what his earnings have looked like in recent years:

When he joined Logan Paul during an episode of his podcast Impaulsive to talk about his career on YouTube, Markiplier opened up about his finances, saying:

I’m open to talking about it because it just seems like such a cheat of the system to be able to have this much success when really all I want to do is make content and inspire others to make content. But at the same time, it’s something I can’t deny, because to deny it would be a hypocritical thing to do.

Calculating how much he’s earned from his video views, we can estimate that he makes roughly $1.21 per 1,000 views. Since he has over 5,000 videos and most of them are viewed over a million times, he roughly earns $9.4 million from views alone. This figure doesn’t include his brand deals.

According to another source – SocialBlade – Markiplier’s channel is currently earning up to $4.3 million a year from his main YouTube channel.

Philanthropy

In March 2018, to celebrate reaching 20 million subscribers, Fischbach shared that he would donate all proceeds from the sale of his Charity Calendar to the Cancer Research Institute.

This success inspired him to start an account on OnlyFans. The proceeds from the account are split evenly between the World Food Programme and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

The first condition for him launching the page was for his Distractible podcast to become number one on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. He also had a condition about the sports podcast he co-created, as well as a condition for fans to pay $12 as an admission for his documentary.

All three conditions were met faster than anyone expected. In December 2022, he launched the page. The traffic was so high that the page crashed soon after it was launched.
