Latest News & Controversies

In recent developments, Zachariah Hoyt, also known as Asmongold, found himself embroiled in significant controversy due to comments made during a live stream regarding the ongoing Gaza conflict.

In an October 2024 stream, Asmongold expressed dismissive views about the Palestinian casualties, labeling them as “an inferior culture,” which led to accusations of hate speech and insensitivity. The backlash from his viewers and broader social media was swift, with many prominent streamers and critics, including Hasan Piker and Yousef “Fousey” Erakat, condemning his statements as offensive and dangerous.

Following the incident, Asmongold issued an apology on social media, acknowledging that his comments were “way too much” and pledging to improve his communication. However, his apology was met with mixed reactions, with some seeing it as insufficient and insincere.

The controversy impacted his professional relationships, as companies and partnerships, including his own organizations OTK and Starforge Systems, began distancing themselves from him.

Both companies issued statements denouncing his comments and announced he would be stepping back from leadership roles to uphold a commitment to inclusivity.

Asmongold’s recent ban from Twitch further compounded the fallout, marking a period of serious reputational and professional setbacks for the streamer as the gaming and streaming communities grapple with calls for accountability in light of his comments.

Asmongold Net Worth:

Asmongold wasn’t a streamer straight out of school. He spent two tax seasons working for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), among other positions. Let’s take a look at how his career progressed over time.

Early Career Days

In 2012 and 2013, Asmongold worked for the International Revenue Service.

He later shared that he enjoyed his position there, but struggled with the socialization aspect and didn’t like potluck functions. Because of this, he had a scheme to make sure no one wanted to eat his food. He wrote ‘barbecued kittens’ on the list of foods people would be bringing, and no one asked him to participate after it.

When he left the IRS, Hoyt started working as a Cafe Associate at Sam’s Club. He would spend his days working there, and his nights applying for colleges and looking for a better job.

He didn’t like this position, so he quit right after his probationary period without telling anyone. He only returned to collect the paycheck, which was quite small due to his short time with the company.

At first, Asmongold wanted to be a lawyer. He had already acquired his business degree and was planning to enroll in law school. However, he abandoned this plan because of his mother’s disease.

Streaming Career

Asmongold’s online career started in 2009. Following his passion for World of Warcraft, he started creating YouTube videos sharing his game knowledge and strategies. His first YouTube video was a five-minute clip where he soloed a boss, Hakkar the Soulflayer.

In the beginning, his videos were guides for new players of the game, but in time, he developed a reputation as being one of the most skilled players in the community. His content on YouTube mainly consisted of guides, gameplay, and reviews related to the game’s patches and expansions.

Asmongold’s YouTube channel experienced quite a steady growth. Even though he started this as a way to make some extra income, he became famous in the WoW world. In 2011, he decided to start live streaming on Twitch, as well.

So, at the absolute minimum, I have put 1500 days [multiplied by] 24 hours into this game. That’s something like 36,000 hours into the game,” he explained.

Earnings from YouTube and Twitch

He crossed the one million mark on Twitch in August 2019, and his account underwent an impressive spike in subscribers in July 2021 with 38,429 subscriptions. Still, for the most part, Asmongold’s net worth comes from YouTube. He has a very loyal community on the platform and registers over 80 million views per month these days! This translates into earnings of around $160,000 – 200,000 a month from YouTube and advertisement revenue alone.

Out of his YouTube channels, he is most active on the Asmongold TV channel on YouTube, where he posts at least one video daily. Asmongold TV is his primary channel but he has four others including Asmongold Gaming and Asmongold Clips.

According to SocialBlade, Asmongold TV alone adds between $32,600 and $521,000 a month to his net worth. This would translate into $390,800 to $6,3 million a year from a single channel!

According to sources like BrokenToys and Sportskeeda, Asmongold’s overall earnings per year are between $2.5 million and $3 million. This includes his earnings from social media platforms, but also brand deals and business investments.

In response, another popular streamer, Hasan Piker, challenged his views, which led to an online debate. All this led to backlash from users of the site, which prompted Asmongold to release a public statement on Twitter, where he said:

The apology seemed to only make the controversy spiral further as most saw it as inauthentic and flippant at best, citing phrasing like “my bad”.

As a result of this latest incident, the zackrawrr account on Twitch was banned for 14 days on October 15. His main Twitch account remains online.
