I have a good friend who’s completely addicted to TikTok. She spends countless hours on the platform going down rabbit hole after rabbit hole. In some ways, it’s been a pleasant distraction for her during the pandemic. But, I’m guessing she’s spending more time here than she would normally like.
On the other hand, I spend an inordinate amount of time on LinkedIn–for a variety of reasons (mostly, because my customers and potential customers are here). But, because I spend so much time on LinkedIn, I don’t spend as much time exploring TikTok, Pinterest, and many other platforms.
My point: Social media is so fragmented now and includes so many different time-consuming platforms, you can’t possibly keep up and show up on all of them.
Not even close. There’s just not enough hours in the day.
So, you can’t possibly know it all when it comes to social media marketing. In 2021, it’s just not possible. There are too many platforms. Too many ad specs. Too many weekly changes. No one can keep up.
And this is coming from someone who’s complete job is to stay on top of this stuff!
Social media marketing is a tough job. You’re expected to know it all. People come to you with all sorts of questions. And, they often just assume you’ll know the answers. Except, as I just laid out, it’s impossible to do that.
HOWEVER.
You can–and should–have the tools to find those answers at a relative moment’s notice.
You can–and should–be able to say “I will look into that and get back to you as soon as I can” when a client asks a question you don’t know the answer to.
You can–and should–TRY to stay on top of social media trends (one way to do that–sign up for my weekly e-newsletter!).
No, you can’t be expected to know everything when it comes to social media marketing. But, you should have tools and processes in place that allow you to uncover the information your clients need quickly. And you should definitely have some sort of system in place that allows you to always be learning–every single day.
You do that, and you’ll be ahead of 95% of your peers in this industry. I guarantee it.
