Whether we like it or not, most business professionals rely heavily on the Internet to complete their tasks. Take a moment to consider what you could really achieve if the Internet were unavailable at work. Perhaps 20 minutes of filing? A few phone calls? Even that might not be realistic without Internet access. The number of tasks you could actually finish would be quite limited, wouldn’t it?
The Internet is a double edged sword. We are getting more done than ever before, but it also means that we don’t have any excuses to not get work done. Remember snow days when you were a kid? You couldn’t get to school so you didn’t have to do school that day. But it’s not that easy when you are an adult. Even if you can’t make it to the office you still have an Internet connection, so you still have to get your work done. No more snow days for you!
Until there’s an Internet outage, that is. No Internet means no work, and the best news is that it can happen any time for any reason, even in the middle of a beautiful spring day. Finally the snow day is back!
So what do you do when there’s an Internet outage? It’s the perfect opportunity to reconnect with the three dimensional world. Instead of staring out your office window you can actually go talk a walk in that beautiful park across the street. Instead of scrolling through Pinterest for recipes on your lunch break you can actually pick up a cookbook and make a trip to the store for special ingredients.
It might take some time to adjust to the non-digital, non-instant world again, but you can do it. What would you do with an Internet snow day?
