Intuition is described as a natural, thoughtless process, requiring no analysis or deep thinking. These impulses are unconsciously developed over time from patterns of experience, belief, and personal biases. From a business perspective, knowing how to utilize intuition can be an invaluable tool.

Unfortunately, modern society and general opinion work to condition us to ignore our intuition, even as children. Phrases like “don’t be emotional,” or “just look at the facts,” turn into mantras, furthering the disconnect between our active thought and intuitive thought. As we grow, the gap widens and as a result our reactions to intuitive signals may result in rash or problematic decisions, or on the other side of the coin, hours of painful deliberation and time-wasting overthinking. But for the lucky few who have been able to hold on to some trust in their intuition, great things become possible.

For many of us, the modern business environments we work in are rapidly changing, fast paced, and sometimes high stakes. It is in these environments that powers of intuition can really begin to shine. It’s no wonder that among business executives, 63% say they regularly rely on their gut feelings when it comes to making choices. In situations where every decision counts, simply relying on facts, figures, and logic may not get the job done. Supplement your intuition with structure; in the words of Malcolm Gladwell “Truly successful decision making relies on a balance between deliberate and instinctive feelings.” When you master your own intuition you can set yourself up for success.

Not all environments and situations are conducive to intuition, and understanding when not to listen is just as important as knowing when to listen. When working under public or regulatory scrutiny, or doing a job or task you are unfamiliar with, it’s best to go by the book so to speak. Situational awareness is half the battle when it comes to intuition, and understanding the whole picture is essential to making successful intuitive decisions.
