After beating Argentina last night, Germany has become the first European nation to win the FIFA World Cup on South American soil. The winning goal of the match was scored in extra time when substitute forward Mario Götze (C) got past the Argentinian defense and put the ball in the net. This marks Germany’s fourth World Cup victory and their first major tournament win since 1996. While the action on the field was thrilling, the social media activity on Facebook and Twitter also set some new records.
Facebook reports that 88 million users made over 280 million posts, comments, and likes about the Germany vs. Argentina game, breaking the previous record for a single sporting event set during Superbowl XLVII (245 million interactions). Twitter also set a new tweets-per-minute record just a few days prior, hitting a peak of 618,725 tweets in one minute as Germany secured the win. Overall, 32.1 million tweets about the World Cup were sent during the match.
Brands too capitalized with some real time marketing while wishing Germany on their win. We have curated 14 such tweets that have not only gained numbers but are also creative enough to make us smile, with the help of Unmetric, a social media monitoring product.
