Eons ago, I worked for a company called AT&T (which is an acronym for American Telephone and Telegraph). Everyday life was filled acronyms, for example, the building I worked in was the NSC (Network Software Center), the department I worked in was the MS (Media Services) department, I made copies on VCRs (Video Cassette Recorders) and when I had to take a break, I went to the LBR (Little Boys Room). There were so many acronyms you needed a playbook like an NFL (National Football League) OC (Offensive Coordinator).
Frankly, acronyms are mind numbing. Last night my wife came home from her job at the bank where she works as a CSR (Customer Service Rep) and mentioned that she had to do a POD (Payable on Death) on a CD (Certificate of Deposit). I started my own business to get away from all of the acronyms, and now I have to deal with PLR!
What The Heck Is PLR?
PLR is Private Label Rights content. It is prewritten content in the form of posts, articles, images and sometimes audio and video content. The most basic PLR are posts or articles that can be used for blog posts, articles, eBooks and more.
You can find PLR for almost any topic or industry. A couple of examples I can offer are from PLR.me, which focuses on PLR for the healthcare industry. This includes self-help, psychology, chiropractic, massage, physicians and so much more. Another is from CoachGlue.com, which focuses on business and life coaches, but works great for many other businesses as well.
Private Label Rights content is a great way to augment your current content marketing strategy. If you have no strategy, then it’s a great place to start. PLR is not to be used as is. It still takes a bit of customization. They provide the content, but you have to add your spin and personalization to make it yours.
Not all PLR is created equal. Some use overseas writers to compile articles, where some, like PLR.me, actually hire mainland experts to compile their content. You have to do your research to see if it’s content that matches with your voice and your audience. Most offer free trials or low cost tryouts, so I suggest you try before you buy. Next, take a stab at modifying. Can you add your logo, pictures and modifications easily? Does it make sense for you?
How Do You Use It?
OK, so now you are aware of PLR, but you are asking is it for me, and what can I do with it? If you are like me where you have a strategy and the time to create a lot of original content, PLR can still have some benefits to your and your business. If you have no time and no plan, then you will want to read on.
- Blog Posts – The first place to start is adding some content to your website. Some PLR content may be too long for the average blog post, but you can extract some good ideas and concepts to start adding content that you can post and then add to social media. This tactic can help you drive people back to your website and also helps Google to index your website and start raising it in the rankings.
- Freemiums – Creating a Lead Magnet is a great way to build your email list. PLR can be used to create free reports that people will download in exchange for their email address. Speaking of which, you can use PLR to create auto responder emails that can be used to keep you top of mind and keep people engaged with your brand and your website.
- eBooks – Some PLR content can be repurposed as short eBooks that you can either sell on Amazon or use as a Freemium. Chances are, you will have to do a bit of editing and adding additional information to turn it into a full-fledged eBook, but PLR gives you a great starting point. Keep in mind that you can’t just copy and paste PLR as a Kindle eBook. Amazon has rules about repetitive content, so be prepared to edit and add your own spin to it!
- Training – You can use PLR to create in-person training in live events, or even create content that can be shared on a membership website. This website can be a one-time pay for all the training or used as drip marketing where content is fed one day or a week at a time. See the next bullet about adding multimedia content to the mix.
- Podcasts & Videos – Think about using the content to create videos. You can record the information and sync a PowerPoint™ presentation or record yourself on video while teaching it (or a mix of the both). You can use the audio to create a podcast that you can deliver via iTunes and other services. Like I said in training, you can use the audio, video and PLR modified content to create a product, course, or membership website.
Final Thoughts
As you can see the opportunities are endless with Private Label Rights content. It all starts with a plan. You have to know your audience and where they hang out. Then, deliver the content with a purpose. Are you trying to drive them back to your website, get them to sign up for your podcast or video podcast, drive them to a membership website, or get them on your email list?
Start with a plan and you will find many uses for PLR. It’s no different than creating original content without a plan. It all starts with your audience, what they want and need to know, and how you can be the best resource for them you can be!
I would love to hear your questions, comments, and experiences with PLR. Comment away!
