“I’m really excited about it,” says Benedict Cumberbatch on Doctor Strange, seeing he has been casted as the titular character in the upcoming film. In an interview with The Wall-Street Journal, Cumberbatch opens up about the Marvel hero and his spirituality.
A lot of people have been saying that Cumberbatch is the perfect casting move for ‘Doctor Strange’. Turns out the ‘Sherlock’ star is using own spirituality to influence how he plays the character. He tells The Wall-Street Journal:
“I meditate often. It’s a big help in calming myself, stepping back from the chaos, staying focused, and being a kinder, more thoughtful person. I learned a lot from my time in Darjeeling, West Bengal, near the Nepali border. I was with Tibetan Buddhist monks in a repurposed Nepali home in India, overlooking Bhutan. It was a deeply impactful experience when I was young. I’ve made an effort to keep it in my life. It’s already a part of me.”
Whether or not filming would take place in the Himalayas hasn’t been revealed by Benedict Cumberbatch on ‘Doctor Strange’, seeing his origin story takes place there. He also claims that even though he never grew up reading Doctor Strange, he has become an avid reader of the Sorcerer Supreme.
Cumberbatch feels his Doctor Strange character is in safe hands with Marvel, and he doesn’t think the film will be a risk just because the Master of the Mystic Arts isn’t as big as The Avengers.
“I don’t see it as a risk because of Marvel. Marvel has a strong track record of taking ordinary comic characters and transforming them into larger-than-life figures. This is something different; it’s an Astral Plane. There’s a big new aspect to this Marvel universe that will be used to develop this story and character. But I’m really excited about it, especially to work with Scott [Derrickson], whose creativity knows no bounds, and all the talented people at Marvel who really understand their craft.”
