Angels and Tomboys Shark Tank Overview

Company: Angels and Tomboys

Founders: Sisters Madison and Mallory Boyd

Season: Appeared on season 8 in the week four episode

Angels and Tomboys provides beauty and body care items for tween and teen girls, featuring specially-scented handmade lotions and body sprays. Their goal is to craft “fun and unique scents [that] inspire you to be proud, be bold and be yourself. Love being a girl…because all girls are wonderfully different.”

“The products contain shea butter, aloe and vitamins A, C and E, according to their website and include scents such as Watermelon Funk, Frozen Hot Chocolate, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Deep Fried Ice Cream and Lemonade Doughnuts. Most of the sprays and lotions cost $12. According to their website, they were inspired to create their fun scents given that mother’s perfumes are too boring, flowery and expensive.”

When Madison and Mallory originally appeared on “Shark Tank” with mother Viara Boyd, they came in asking for $55,000 for 20 percent equity. All of the sharks liked the scents, however, many found the products too expensive or thought there was too much risk involved. Ultimately, Daymond John and Mark Cuban teamed up and offered $60,000 for 33.3 percent equity, which they accepted.

Viara Boyd spoke with Business 2 Community about Angels and Tomboys’s experience on the show and what their next steps are.

Q&A with Angels and Tomboys’s Viara Boyd

What was your strategy for navigating “Shark Tank”?

To create and deliver an unforgettable pitch that included music and dance moves! We watch “Shark Tank” on a regular so, we wanted to do something that had never been done.

How has Angels and Tomboys changed since the episode was first recorded? Since it aired?

After recording both Mark Cuban and Daymond John’s teams began working swiftly to assist us in developing an online store that could accommodate the influx of traffic and orders placed on our site. We also immediately polished up our social media sites since we knew a lot of people would search online for our company and we wanted them to easily find us as well as clearly understand our story.

Although we prepared greatly prior to airing, after airing we find ourselves still implementing new processes and procedures considering how rapidly our business is growing.

Is there anything you would have changed about your time spent in the tank, including your pitch and valuation?

Considering we got a deal with two sharks, no we wouldn’t change anything about what we did!

Who’s your favorite shark?

Daymond John and Mark Cuban have always been our favorite Sharks.

Do you think “Shark Tank” was the right move for your business?

Absolutely. Having that experience in our books taught us a lot about business and it also has opened a lot of doors for us.

What are Angels and Tomboys’s next steps?

Continue to grow our e-commerce store as well as land a partnership with major retail outlets while continuing to offer excellent customer service and great products for girls.

Where do you see the handmade body lotions/sprays industry in 5-10 years?

The skin care industry is not slowing down. People are becoming more and more aware and conscious as to what goes on their and their children’s skin. This increases the demand for products like ours that are made with natural ingredients and no unnecessary chemicals like parabens.

What would you say to people who want to start their own business?

It’s no easy task but, it is well worth it. Go for it, have tough skin and ENJOY every step of the journey.

What advice would you give to entrepreneurs who want to make it on “Shark Tank”?

Be innovative and fearless. Be marketable.
