Fans of Harry Potter have something else to enjoy in the wonderful world of “Potterworld” – backstory and a glimpse into the life of fan-favorite, Draco Malfoy.
There are times when J.K. Rowling doesn’t know why Draco Malfoy has so much appeal and such a large fanbase, but she recently stated “Everybody recognizes Draco because everybody has known someone like him”, which gives readers a reason to “love to hate” the character. In Rowling’s latest Pottermore entry (which requires a free membership to view) she gives fans insight into the history behind one of Harry Potter’s most notorious rivals and villains, which shows a never-before seen take into a character who deserves more story.
The story, one of 12 stories from Rowling as her Christmas gifts to fans, is a close examination on his lineage, psyche, and motives. Similar to her story on Professor Umbridge, Rowling teaches us about Draco’s proviledged upbringing and the silver spoon he was born with, his experience at Hogwarts, the envy and hatred he had for Harry, and his admiration for his father, Lucius. Draco’s main goal was to follow in his father’s footsteps, of which Rowling says “All his life, he had idolized a father who advocated violence and was not afraid to use it himself, and now that his son discovered in himself a distaste for murder, he felt it to be a shameful failing.”
In the story, Rowling brings readers not only insight, but peace in knowing his future. According to the new tale, Draco married another student in the Slytherin house, Astoria Greengrass, who together with Draco both agreed to not raise their children with the morals and beliefs of their poisonous and hate-filled families. “I imagine that Draco grew up to lead a modified version of his father’s existence; independently wealthy, without any need to work, Draco inhabits Malfoy Manor with his wife and son.” Rowling mentions, to give at least some conclusion and answers into Malfoy’s future.
