Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born in Houston, Texas on September 4, 1981. Her parents are Celestine Knowles, a salon owner and hairdresser, and Mathew Knowles, a sales manager at Xerox. She has one sister, Solange Knowles, a former backup dancer for Destiny’s Child who is also a singer.

Celestine Knowles decided to name her first-born daughter Beyoncé as a homage to many versions of her paternal last name.

Beyoncé attended St. John’s United Methodist Church in Houston and was raised Methodist. She and her family would also attend Midnight Mass at St. Mary of the Purification Catholic Church on Christmas Eve since her mother’s family was Catholic.

Later on, Beyoncé enrolled at St. Mary’s Catholic Montessori School in Houston, where she started taking dance classes. Once, when Beyoncé finished her dance instructor Darlette Johnson’s song that she was humming, she impressed her with her range and singing talent. It was this teacher who encouraged her to enter a talent show, which she won by singing John Lennon’s Imagine at only seven years old.

In 1990, Beyoncé enrolled in Parker Elementary School, where she sang in the school’s choir. Later, she studied at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, followed by Alief Elsik High School.

While in high school, Beyoncé was a member of the choir at St. John’s United Methodist Church, where she quickly became a soloist. This is where the now-famous singer sang her first solo. She remained as a soloist at the church for two years.

Personal Life

In 2002, when Beyoncé Knowles and her now-husband Jay-Z collaborated on 03 Bonnie & Clyde, the media started speculating about their relationship. Fast forward to April 2008 and the two married privately. Even today, they are known to have a very private relationship, with little being known about their personal life.

In August 2011, during the MTV Video Music Awards, where Beyoncé performed Love On Top, she ended her performance by revealing her pregnancy. The announcement led to the Guinness Record for “most tweets per second recorded for a single event” on Twitter with 8,868 tweets per second. On January 7, 2012, the couple had their first child, their daughter Blue Ivy.

In February 2017, Beyoncé shared on Instagram that she was expecting twins, breaking another world record – this time for the most-liked image on the platform at the time. In July of the same year, she uploaded the first image of the twins, named Rumi and Sir, confirming their birth on June 13, 2017.

Beyoncé Net Worth: How an Aspiring Singer/ Dancer Turned World-Famous Diva

Beyoncé embarked on her music career in her childhood with her father managing her music group. Let’s see how she came to achieve such a high status in the entertainment industry and earned her near-billionaire fortune.

Early Career Days

When Beyoncé was only eight years old, she met LaTavia Roberson when she auditioned for an all-girl group. Both were selected for a group called Girl’s Tyme with three others. The group danced and rapped on the talent show circuit in Houston.

This turned out to be a vital stepping stone in young Beyoncé’s career. R&B producer Arne Frager saw the group’s performance and took the girls to his Northern California studio, placing them in the largest talent show on national TV at the time, Star Search.

Even though Girl’s Tyme didn’t win, this was the beginning of their journey. Beyoncé’s father quit his job and started managing the group, a decision that led to financial turmoil for the Knowles family.

Matthew Knowles cut the group to four at the beginning of his management of Girl’s Tyme. The group then performed as an opening act for other R&B girl groups and started auditioning before various record labels. Eventually, they were signed to Elektra Records and then Atlanta Records. However, while they were working on their first recording, the company decided to remove them from their roster.

All of this, combined with Matthew’s decision to leave his job, put further strain on the Knowles family. Eventually, Beyoncé’s parents separated.

However, the girl group did get its breakthrough soon after. In October 1995, Grass Roots Entertainment by Dwayne Wiggins signed the group and, less than a year later, they started recording a debut album under an agreement with Sony Music. Shortly after, the Knowles family reunited and the group signed a new contract with Columbia Records.

The group would change several times over the years. The original members would become Destiny’s Child – Beyoncé, Rowland, Roberson, and Luckett. When Roberson and Luckett left the group, they were replaced by William and Franklin, but Franklin also left, so the group continued as a trio.

Beyoncé’s Rise to Fame with Destiny’s Child (Girl’s Tyme)

In 1996, inspired by a passage in the Book of Isiah, the girl group changed their name to Destiny’s Child. A year later, they released their major label debut song titled Killing Time which was included on the soundtrack to the movie Men In Black. That same year, they released their debut single No, No, No, rapidly becoming a hit. Consequently, Destiny’s Child released their self-titled debut album in February 1998.

In 1999, Destiny’s Child released a second album that was certified platinum soon after, The Writing’s On the Wall. The album features songs including Bills, Bills, Bills – written by Kandi Burruss – Say My Name, and Jumpin’ Jumpin. Say My Name became their most successful song and one of the group’s signature songs, winning the Best R&B Song at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards.

In 2000, the band’s Independent Women Part I recording appeared on the soundtrack to Charlie’s Angels and became their best-charting single at the time. This song was later added to their third album Survivor, released in May 2001.

The group’s third album debuted at number one almost right away and sold 663,000 copies in its first week. It spawned other hits including Survivor and Bootylicious. Survivor won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

In October 2001, Destiny’s Child released a holiday album titled 8 Days of Christmas. However, after this release, they announced a hiatus, planning to pursue solo careers as artists.

The group would join forces again to record their final studio album Destiny Fulfilled, which was released on November 15, 2004, and included singles like Soldier and Lose My Breath.

After the release of the album, Destiny’s Child embarked on the worldwide concert tour Destiny Fulfilled… and Lovin’ It, which was sponsored by McDonald’s Corporation.

At the last stop of the tour, on June 11, 2005, in Barcelona, Rowland shared that Destiny’s Child was disbanding after the tour. They released a compilation album Number 1s in October 2006 and got a Hollywood Walk of Fame star that same year. Little did Beyoncé know that her solo career would take her to even higher highs.

Beyoncé Becomes a Solo Artist

In 1999, while she was still with the girl group, Beyoncé recorded a duet with Marc Nelson, then with Boyz II Men, on After All Is Said and Done, to be used for the soundtrack to The Best Man.

In July 2002, after the band broke down, Beyoncé released Work It Out as the lead single from the soundtrack album of Austin Powers in Goldmember, her theatrical film debut.

A year later, she released the lead single from the soundtrack album for The Fighting Temptations, where she starred as Lilly. Her single was titled Fighting Temptation and was a collaboration between her, Missy Elliot, Free, and MC Lyte.

In October 2002, Beyoncé’s first solo recording was released, and it was a feature on her now-husband Jay-Z’s song 03 Bonnie & Clyde. The song peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and marked the beginning of her very fruitful solo career, the most successful of all the members of Destiny’s Child.

In June of the following year, Beyoncé Knowles premiered songs from Dangerously in Love, her first solo album. She did this during the pay-per-view television special Ford Presents Beyoncé Knowles, Friends & Family, Live from Ford’s 100th Anniversary Celebration in Dearborn, Michigan, as well as during her first concert as a solo artist.

Later that month, the album was released and sold 317,000 copies in its first week. Since then, her first album has sold 11 million copies, with the lead single Crazy in Love becoming one of Beyoncé’s all-time top tracks.

Other singles in this album included Baby Boy, Naughty Girl, and Me, Myself and I.

Beyoncé’s first album as a solo artist won her five awards at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards.

At the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, Beyoncé got ten nominations and won six of them, breaking the record she tied in 2004 for most awards won in a single night by a female artist.

Following this success, she provided guest vocals for Telephone, Lady Gaga‘s single, and announced a hiatus from her music career. Her break lasted nine months where she spent much of her time traveling around the world. When she returned, her father was no longer her manager.

Other Albums

Let’s see what other albums Beyoncé has released during her music career.

B’Day

Beyoncé planned to release a second album soon after the first, but she instead focused on the last album and tour with Destiny’s Child. In September 2006, after the band officially disbanded, the now-famous artist released her second solo album B’Day to coincide with her birthday. The album sold 541,000 in its first week and included Deja Vu featuring Jay-Z, Irreplaceable, Green Light, and more.

The music video for Single Ladies was so popular that it created the first major dance craze on the internet. That same video won three categories at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, losing to Taylor Swift‘s You Belong with Me video in the Best Female Video category. This led to scandal, with Kanye West interrupting the ceremony.

Beyoncé’s fourth studio album 4 was released in 2011 and sold 310,000 copies in its first week. It included the singles Run the World (Girls), Love on Top, and Best Thing I Never Had, all topping the music charts.

This album reached a billion Spotify streams in 2018 and made Beyoncé the first female artist with three of her albums surpassing this number on the platform.

Beyoncé

To everyone’s surprise, Beyoncé released her fifth studio self-titled album in December 2013 without any announcement. She released it on the iTunes store and, even though it dropped without any promotion, the album almost instantly debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart. At this point, she was the first woman in Billboard’s chart’s history with her first five studio albums debuting at number one. In only six days, the album sold one million digital copies worldwide.

The album Beyoncé has sold over 5 million copies worldwide and won three awards at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

Lemonade

In 2016, Beyoncé released a teaser clip for her project Lemonade. A corresponding album with the same title, as well as a one-hour film on HBO, was released a few days later. The album was streamed 115 million times through Tidal, making it the most-streamed album in a week by a female artist in history. She won eight out of 11 nominations at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, making her the most-awarded artist in the history of the VMAs – surpassing Madonna with 20 in total.

The company is named after a street in Houston where Beyoncé once lived and is now headquartered in New York. These days, Parkwood Entertainment is an umbrella for the artist’s various brands in fashion, movies, music, and videos.

The duo also founded Beyond Productions, the family’s brand management company, providing the licensing for House of Deréon and its collection Deréon.

Since she was still with Destiny’s Child, House of Deréon pieces were exhibited in the band’s shows and tours. The collection includes denim and fur offerings, sportswear, outwear, and accessories, and remains available at specialty stores and departments in the US and Canada.
