The word is spreading about an advantageous tool for online shopping that recently came into the limelight. Whether it’s clothes, shoes, jewelry, home furnishings, technology, or fine art; baby, they’ve got what you need (or want).

The NYC startup site turned eBay acquisition Svpply is a vast database of shared product interests. Many have now likened it to Pinterest, but instead of a female-based community dedicated to graphic collections, Svpply is geared toward a dynamic shopping experience for the unisex crowd.

Here’s what can be done with it:

Add products you like: Svpply runs on consumer interest, so it all starts when a product catches someone’s eye. It can be from any store on any site, but I’ve noticed that Etsy items are an especially hot commodity on Svpply. An easy-to-use button is provided on their site that can be dragged to the bookmarks toolbar in your respective browser. With two clicks (hit the “Buy Later” bookmark, then the respective image to include) a user can add an item to Svpply.

Oh, just some dope kicks I may have ordered earlier this week from CCS. Figured I’d also share them on Svpply while I was at it.

“Want” stuff: When perusing merchandise on Svpply, users can document their favorites by clicking the “want” button below any product image. This adds items to a personal collection that can later be viewed on the user’s profile page.

Make collections: Besides what appears on their profile, users are able to make collections out of their wanted products. Clicking “collect” in the item menu will add something to a collection. From there users can name it, add contributors who can also edit the collection, and clone other people’s collections.

This way a shopper’s favorite wants can be organized into succinct groups and even given themes, just as Svpply’s staff has done for Camping…or Horror?! Various collections can also be followed to keep track of what the owners add if they share a similar taste in aesthetic.

Follow stores and people: Just like collections can be followed, the same can be done for stores and other people on Svpply. They’ll show up in the feed and tailor to what an individual is the most interested in.

Comment on items: Users can leave their thoughts behind on any given item, whether they loved it or have critical input.

List what you own: Similar to collections of wants, everyone can show the world what products they own. It’s an extra bit of pride-based encouragement that makes shoppers want to buy, so they can own.

How business owners and vendors can utilize Svpply:

Gain exposure: Over 1.1 million products are displayed over 5 million times a month on Svpply’s database. That’s a lot of views, and having your merchandise show up will generate exposure for your business.

Not to mention that with the recent eBay purchase of Svpply, there’s been a lot of talk and additional attention given to the service, and that’s bound to mean an increase in users. eBay already has a giant customer base of dedicated internet shoppers and vendors alike that will be turned on by what Svpply has to offer.

Another way to get customers to share products on Svpply is the inclusion of the Svpply button to your store’s webpage.

Just like the store followings described above (such as Photojojo), a store can be claimed and managed by its originating business owners. They are automatically created when a product is added from any given site, but legitimate owners have the ability to commandeer their rightful storefronts on Svpply after a confirmation with the webmaster.

A little (or lotta’) free advertising never hurt anyone.

Increase traffic: Every item on Svpply has a link back to the original seller’s site via the “buy” button. So once your products have been added, any curious user can easily make their way to your store.

Svpply’s design instigates backlinking to seller pages by vaguely listing a picture, title, and price range for each item. With products lacking a thorough description and concrete price, I found myself regularly redirecting via the “buy” button to see more about a piece of merchandise that I’d be interested in grabbing. This means that shoppers are routinely redirecting over to vendor’s websites any time they find a product they’d like to know more about (and sometimes end up buying).

Track trending products: It’s a fantastic tool for seeing what products from your store are becoming popular. Gauge customer interest after a quick peek at Svpply, and get a better idea of what customers want from you.

Network with others: Although the service is not designed for networking, nobody’s saying you can’t get in touch with other professionals using Svpply as the middle man.

Also consider this an opportunity to interact with consumers. Any comment-based media is a chance to join in the conversation, and to answer questions that inquisitive and excited users have.

Get ideas: If nothing else, you’ll be able to browse the endless archives to see what other folks are creating and selling. You’ll see what the masses are paying the most attention to, and perhaps lightbulbs will go off.

Svpply has proven itself to be a beneficial resource for both shoppers and vendors. I would encourage anyone with a web-based store to explore the service and use it to their advantage. Just be careful; it’s addicting and you’re bound to drop a few bucks.
