For years, web developers have been pulling their hair out trying to create cutting-edge designs for modern browsers while also making them function in ancient software like Internet Explorer 8. Those designers got a little help from Microsoft last week when they announced a deadline for support of any version of IE before the current IE 11.
“After January 12, 2016, only the most recent version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical support and security updates,” Roger Capriotti, Director of Internet Explorer, wrote on Microsoft’s IEBlog. The company touts benefits for users staying up-to-date with the latest software, but moving away from old versions of Internet Explorer has some giant implications for designers. Here’s how Capriotti describes it:
“Older browsers may not support modern Web standards, so browser fragmentation is a problem for Web site developers.”
Yeah, that’s a bit of an understatement.
