When we look at unemployment in the US, over all there are 3.6 unemployed people for every listed job opening, but when it comes to STEM jobs, the same can’t be said. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is crucial for innovation, yet businesses are still struggling to find employees. There are only two STEM job openings for every one qualified unemployed individual. The competition among companies is so high that exclusive perks are being offered to employees. Unlimited sick days and three square meals a day are not entirely unheard of and are just another sign of how hard it is to find the right employees.
So where is this massive gap coming from? In this economy it’s hard to imagine that by 2018 there could be 2.4 million unfilled stem jobs. People with the skills that STEM jobs require are in high demand in almost every field. The growth prediction of STEM jobs is much higher than average (10%) at 17%. Most of this growth will come from computer careers and engineers and technicians.
