4-E (Welch looks for the 4-E’s when hiring, then finally passion).
1. Positive energy – does the person go, go and go some more. Do they thrive on action and relish change? Do they start the day with enthusiasm and usually end it that way.
2. Ability to energize others – positive energy is the ability to get other people revved up. People who energize can inspire their team to take on the impossible – and enjoy the hell out of doing it. Doing so takes a strong knowledge about your business and strong persuasion skills.
3. Edge – the ability to make yes or no decisions.
4. Execute – the ability to get the job done.
Passion – people who are passionate about work also tend to be passionate about other things in their life.
Hiring for the Top
Authenticity – self-confidence and conviction should be rampant in the ideal job candidate looking to be recruited. These traits make a leader bold and decisive, which is absolutely critical in times when you must act quickly. Must be comfortable in their own skin.
Ability to see around corners – the best leaders have to have a vision and the ability to predict the future, but good leaders must have a special capacity to anticipate the radically unexpected.
Surrounding oneself with better people than they are – a good leader can put together teams that make him or her the dumbest in the room. They are not insecure about having highly intelligent and sometimes more competent employees working for them.
Heavy-duty resilience – every leader makes mistakes, every leader stumbles and falls. The question is whether they can regroup and then get going again with renewed speed, conviction and confidence. Welch liked leaders who had the wind knocked out of them, but proved that they could run even harder in the next race.
The former CEO of the giant organization knew that business, in order to succeed was not as easy as some think and hard times befall on everyone.
