I hope no one is planning on Joss Whedon directing Avengers 3 & 4, aka “Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 and 2”, because he has no plans to helm these sequels. Even now as he’s hard at work on Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, he has already stated “I couldn’t imagine doing this again” to Empire Magazine.
Whedon continued, “”It’s enormously hard, and it [will] be, by [the time I would make ‘Avengers 3 & 4’], a good five years since I created anything that was completely my own. So it’s very doubtful that I would take on the two-part Infinity War movie that would eat up the next four years of my life. I obviously still want to be a part of the Marvel Universe – I love these guys – but it ain’t easy. This year has been more like running three shows than any year of my life. It is bonkers.”
This information isn’t totally unheard of. Last year there was a rumor that the directors of Captain America: The Winter Solider, Joe and Anthony Russo were both Marvel’s pick to direct Avengers 3 & 4.
When he spoke with Empire Magazine recently, Whedon had some bold words for the series. “I’ve been working on a lot of Ultron scenes so I’m very anti-Avengers right now. You can’t write someone if you don’t love them and I’ve come to the conclusion that Ultron is right. The Avengers need to die.” It’s always possible that he was making the statement to be a joke, but considering he’s stated that he has no plans to come back to direct, it may be possible that he’s getting drained out from the series.
It hasn’t been said that Wheden is completely done with Marvel. Even if he decides not to direct it, it’s possible he will remain with the company to write or produce.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released in America on May 1st, 2015
