I’d like to take a moment to mourn the loss of Steve Jobs, who passed away Wednesday evening. The immediate and overwhelming response to this news stands as testimony to the momentous impact Steve Jobs has had on so many people.
Steve is known as a true visionary who aimed to make technology easy for everyday people. But he was more than just a maker of beautiful and groundbreaking products. He also inspired many to think outside the box and challenge conventions. Beyond being a talented inventor, he was an exceptional person.
In response to this sad news, Apple honors Steve’s memory with a full-page tribute on the Apple.com homepage:
When Steve Jobs stepped down from his position as the CEO for Apple in August, he wrote in his resignation letter:
“I think Apple’s best and most creative days are still to come. I am excited to see and help with its success in a new position. I have made some of my closest friends at Apple, and I appreciate all the years of working with you.”
Current Apple CEO Tim Cook released the following statement following news of Steve’s death:
“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”
The internet exploded after news of Steve’s death, with many people posting condolences and quotes from the man who created Apple. Everyone from government officials and celebrities to students and consumers have been taking time to remember Steve and consider the profound impact he has had on modern technology.
President Obama noted that:
“The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented.”
Since news of Steve Jobs’s death first surfaced, #ThankYouSteve has been continuously trending. Here are some samples:
Apple is also asking for those who would like to share their condolences to email [email protected].
Although I myself haven’t been much of a Mac fan, I would never deny the tremendous influence Apple products have had on how technology is understood and experienced today. Steve Jobs was an inspiring man, and he will be missed by many.
