Who run the world? Girls. Especially those who will be named “Formation Scholars” as part of Beyoncé’s new scholarship program. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of “Lemonade,” the Grammy award-winning singer launched the Formation scholarship program that will award four scholarships to young women who are pursuing a number of creative studies.
The scholarships, which will be awarded for the 2017-2018 academic year, will “encourage and support young women who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious and confident,” according to a statement on Beyoncé’s website.
Four incoming or current students who are studying creative arts, music, literature or African-American studies at Berklee College of Music, Parsons School of Design, Howard University or Spelman College will be awarded scholarships. One student from each school will earn the title of “Formation Scholar.”
The “Formation Scholars” program is just one of Beyoncé’s many charitable contributions. Last year, she aligned with three charities for her Formation World Tour, raised $1 million along with husband Jay-Z at a carnival-themed fundraiser and was named most charitable celebrity of 2016. She has raised awareness and money for the Black Lives Matter movement, the Flint water crisis, women’s rights and more. Her #BeyGood global charity campaign, which encourages people to be kind and charitable both to each other and their communities, was launched in 2013.
“Lemonade,” a surprise visual album, was released April 23, 2016, on Tidal after the HBO premiere of a conceptual short film by the same name. The short film earned four Emmy nominations and the album received nine Grammy nominations, including one for Album of the Year.
