My first reaction after seeing #EscapeVelocity trending at the top of India Twitter Trends – is it a brand running a contest or has some politician again said something controversial? After checking the first few tweets, it was evident to me as a Congress-BJP social media fight on Twitter. The hashtag has taken shape from the speech of the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, who had used the term in support of the Dalits.
The Gandhi scion who has shown a special interest in the country’s Dalit community, today urged for more representation for the community in the Congress party and attacked BSP leader Mayawati, saying that she was not allowing other Dalit leaders to rise, reports NDTV.
Addressing a function on National Awareness Camp for Scheduled Castes Empowerment at Vigyan Bhavan in the capital, Rahul Gandhi also took the chance to hit the opposition saying they would lose the 2014 elections as “they had ignored the Dalits, never bothered to go to their homes or hold their hands and understand their problems.”
He further added the Dalit community “needs the escape velocity of Jupiter” to achieve success. Explaining further about the phenomenon of escape velocity – or the speed that an object needs to be travelling to break free of a planet or moon’s gravity, Rahul shared that B.R. Ambedkar was the first Dalit to attain escape velocity, and after him Kanshi Ram channelized “the energy that was created due to reservation” and helped many Dalits attain escape velocity.
However, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, Mayawati had captured the Dalit leadership and was not allowing others to rise, remarked the Congress VP bringing many cheers among the audience.
#EscapeVelocity trends on Twitter
The hashtag #EscapeVelocity started trending in no time on Twitter and while writing the post the hashtag was still holding the top position on the India Twitter trends. However, the tweets were not in support of the Gandhi scion and a laugh riot has erupted for the use of physics to explain the problems of Dalits in the country. I don’t think that the hashtag is going to die any sooner since the opposition is at its best to keep it trending.
