Muslims around the world are reacting with shock and horror to the Wednesday attack on satirical Paris newspaper, Charlie Hebdo, which left 12 dead. The newspaper is thought to have drawn the attention of terrorists due to it’s publication of satirical caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad. One of the men is said to have screamed “Allahu akbar” as he and another masked gunman opened fire on the office full of unarmed civilians.

Leaders at the Grand Mosque of Paris, one of the largest Islamic worship centers in France, released the following statement shortly after the attacks.

“We strongly condemn these kind of acts and we expect the authorities to take the most appropriate measures. Our community is stunned by what just happened. It’s a whole section of our democracy that is seriously affected. This is a deafening declaration of war. Times have changed, and we are now entering a new era of confrontation.”

The mosque was joined by Muslim practitioners and leaders around the world who are expressing their condemnation of the attacks to the global community. Among them were France’s Union of Islamic Organizations which stated, “The UOIF condemns in the strongest terms this criminal attack, and these horrible murders. The UOIF expresses its deepest condolences to the families and all the employees of Charlie Weekly.”

Hassen Chalghoumi, iman of Paris’s Drancy mosque expressed his anger to France’s BFM TV. “Their barbarism has nothing to do with Islam,” he said. “These are criminals, barbarians. They have sold their soul to hell. This is not freedom. This is not Islam and I hope the French will come out united at the end of this.”

Other leaders and members the Muslim community took to social media to express their outrage, many stressing the importance of the verse in the Koran that likens the killing of one innocent person to that of the entire world. Popular twitter thread #notinmyname has attracted a huge response from Muslims around the world who are sick of seeing their religion hi-jacked and misrepresented by terrorists.
