Michael Brown was sacrificed to a racist God, at least that’s what one professor from the University of Pennsylvania believes. Anthea Butler, an associate professor of religious studies at the University of Pennsylvania, blamed Brown’s shooting death and the subsequent grand jury decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson as proof that America worships a “God of white supremacy.”

In Religion Dispatches, an independent blog hosted by the University of Southern California, Butler contributes a post in which she claims:

“America’s racist god requires black people’s blood to atone for the sins committed by its followers. This time, the bloodshed in sacrifice to this god of white supremacy was Michael Brown’s.”

In the post, the professor also slams St. Louis prosecutor Rob McCulloch for his poor handling of the case and compares him to the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate, while claiming that Darren Wilson was an acting agent for a white supremacist God.

She also continued to rant about America never being the land of the free and in fact being the home to those who cheat the justice system in order to maintain a white-dominant order.

The professor’s editorial further claims that the country has always been a white supremacist nation that believes that everything that does not conform to a white body is inherently evil and must be vanquished.

Butler’s assertion that Michael Brown was sacrificed to a racist God is not the first time that the university lecturer made such remarks. She posted a similar editorial on the same blog following the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin.

Unsurprisingly, the notion that Michael Brown was a sacrificial lamb for a racist God was met with instant rebuttal from social media. Many have outright condemned Butler as a loon and radical extremist who has no business being in an academic environment.
