A Florida man named Christian Jose Gomez, 23, was arrested Wednesday on charges of first-degree murder when the police found a battered and decapitated woman outside his Oldsmar home. Investigators arrived on the scene around 7:30 last night in response to reports of a deceased female with obvious signs of trauma outside the residence.
The victim, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death was declared to be blunt force trauma, though deputies confirm that the woman had also been decapitated. Though Gomez was no longer on the scene when law enforcement arrived, he was arrested a few blocks away shortly after the investigation began.
At this time, no possible motives for the crime have been released, though the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is expected to release more details Thursday afternoon. In the past Gomez has been arrested and charged with crimes such as loitering and prowling, resisting an officer, and disorderly conduct.
UPDATED- 2:50 PT- The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office released information Thursday afternoon revealing that the 911 call they received was placed by Gomez’s older brother, Mario. Though unharmed himself, the panicked man was calling to report that his younger brother, Christian, had just murdered their mother and cut off her head.
Responding officers confirmed the death when they arrived to find the body of 48-year-old Maria Suarez Cassagne alongside a row of garbage cans, one of which contained her decapitated head. Investigators found an ax near-by, which they believe to be the murder weapon. Police say that Gomez, who was picked up riding a bike a few blocks from the scene of the crime, has admitted to the killing and been charged with first degree murder.
As for Gomez’s motive? Sheriff Bob Gualtieri recently released a statement to CNN revealing that Gomez said he had simply become fed up with his mother’s “nagging,” as she had apparently been asking him to move some boxes to the attic over the past two days.
