This brings forward an interesting thought regarding the balance between strategy and alignment – two concepts that are particularly important especially in the realm of enterprise mobility and mobile security.

Strategy is a word that gets tossed around all the time in the workplace

Every company is filled with conversations and meetings that consist of “strategy.” No matter how daunting this word may seem, to put simply, strategy is defined as a plan of action towards achieving a certain end. What is misleading is the thought that strategy consists of one single plan of action. The truth is that at any given time, underneath the headline strategy, there are multiple plans of action ongoing to address different aspects of its operations – each addressing a goal the company has tasked for itself…and rightfully so. This way, they ensure that nothing is missed and that all avenues or entry points are carefully considered. By breaking things down into simple parts, it can lead to a much clearer vision or picture of the whole. After all, with simplicity comes precision.

The same is true when it comes to enterprise mobility

There is no one single strategy that will cover all avenues of a company’s mobile adoption. Often, it consists of a sum of many parts – covering aspects such as mobile applications, mobile platform, mobile devices, mobile content, and most importantly finding a way to secure all of these different parts and protecting corporate assets. Now, the existence of these many parts can be confusing and it can be a lot to handle. With many moving parts, it can get messy quickly…this is where alignment comes in.

Once you’ve determined the different moving parts you need to organize, you need to ensure that these parts are aligned or harmonized not only with the overall goal but also amongst each other. It is important to ensure that all parts are working correctly. After all, in areas such as mobile security, it only takes one insecure device to bring down your whole business. One insecure device can lead to a data breach with a hefty US$5.5M price tag. Business should also be aware of all parts and entry points because maybe it’s not a device – maybe it’s an app, malicious content, or an insecure communication line. No one really knows. Your best bet is to ensure that all entry points are covered, no page left unturned or door unopened.

The crucial first step? Be informed

Before you start, you need to be aware of all the different avenues you need to take into consideration. From this knowledge, you are better able to make determinations on which avenues your internal operations can be accountable for and which would be more ideal to resource to another vendor.

Jim Collins and Jerry Porras once said, “Building a visionary company requires one percent vision and 99 percent alignment.” In building your mobile strategy – or any strategy – make sure you are equipped to cover all entry points and that all moving parts are aligned to paint a crisp, precise, larger picture. It’s going to be tough at first, but with mobility’s promise of opportunity and success, it will all be worth it.
