People often ask me, “ What’s the secret to success?” My reply…

Do the work.

Yep, that’s it. There is no magic pill, no shortcut, or a path of least resistance. If you want to be successful…do the work.

I like how Will Smith put it, “When the other guy is sleeping, I am working. When the other guy is eating, I am working.”

So what’s my point?

A vast majority of wannapreneurs will watch 3-hours of sports (and the highlights), or attend multiple social events (and the after party); yet they will complain when they have to put forth the slightest bit of effort into their own business.

“Success without effort is like an honest teenager…it doesn’t exist.” ~ Dr. Donna

A false sense of reality

The R&B singer Anthony Hamilton was being interviewed and the person conducting the interview said, “Wow, you’re an overnight success!” Anthony paused, laughed and then responded, “Yes…and it only took me 10-years to do it.”

You see, in the words of Eric Thomas, while someone “is on their grind,” you don’t see the years of failures, disappointments and setbacks. You only see the finished product and you think that it just “magically happened.”

So what’s the answer?

The reality is, success takes years and years of honing and developing your skills. If you want it, you’re gonna have to do the work. No one should have to “motivate you, convince you, or inspire you.” It’s your goal, it’s your dream, it’s your responsibility to make it a reality.

Here’s a personal example:

I read that successful entrepreneurs wake up before the sun. After reading that article I started waking up at 5 a.m. seven days a week. I don’t spend a lot of hours watching TV, socializing, or engaging in non-productive activities. I am building a global business and this requires a great deal of focus, it requires a lot of work.

The truth is, success is not an accident, you don’t just bump into it on the way to the grocery store. The ONLY way that you are going to achieve success is to do the work.

Success is a habit…not a hobby
