Richard Griffiths as Uncle Vernon Dursley in Harry Potter

Richard Griffiths played Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter films

Richard Griffiths, also known as Uncle Vernon in the “Harry Potter” films, died at the age of 65. He died on Thursday at University Hospital because of complications after having heart surgery. Richard Griffiths was very well known in England and was considered one of the great British stage actors of his generation. He was a larger man with a large presence on screen and on stage, but he was a very kind person.

Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter in the series, had nothing but good things to say about Griffiths. Radcliffe said that he was proud to have known him and that Griffiths helped him in two of the most difficult times in his life. The first scene that Radcliffe filmed for “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” was outside of the Dursleys’ house, and Richard Griffiths was there to help calm his nerves. Then Radcliffe and Griffiths began working on “Equus” together seven years later.

Although most people will always remember him as Uncle Vernon, a mean and un-magical character who was afraid of magic and was the guardian of Harry in the films, he had been in several other things as well. He had roles in the following:

  • “The Sunshine Boys”
  • “TV series “Pie in the Sky”
  • “Chariots of Fire”
  • “Gandhi”
  • “The Naked Gun 2 1/2”
  • “The Habit of Art”
  • “The History Boys”

Richard Griffiths won an Olivier Award and a Tony as well as awards for his performances in 2006 adaptions of “The History Boys.” He was well known for his sense of humor. He was also known for shaming audience members if their phones went off during the performance and would even demand that they leave before continuing with his performance. He was also a very good listener.

Griffiths leaves behind his wife, Heather Gibson and many friends, family, and fans.
