The world will be watching (and tweeting) as the 2012 Olympics kick off this week. But those able to be in London during this time will get a special visual treat. Thanks to a special project called Energy of the Nation, the London Eye will be transformed into an illuminated mood ring displaying Twitter sentiment regarding the Olympics.

Every day of the Olympics and Paralympics at 9:00pm British Summer Time, the Eye will light up in different colors depending on any positive or negative comments made on Twitter. Tweets will be scanned for Olympic-relevant terms along with the hashtag related to the project, “#energy2012”. The tweets are also passed through a sentiment algorithm that places weight on different words to help determine how positive or negative the message.

For those not in London, don’t feel completely left out. The light shows will be streamed live at edfenergyofthenation.com. You can also check out the promo video below.
