Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 It’s official: The Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year for 2013 is… Selfie [sel-fEE] noun 1. a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smart phone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website. Example 1. “I took an awesome selfie yesterday at that party and dropped it on Instagram. I have like 17 likes on it now!” The term is well deserving of official word status. Use of the word selfie has increased by 17,000% from November 2012 – November 2013 according to Oxford’s own research, as millions of self-taught, self-portrait photographers have snapped selfies all over the world in all kinds of both beautiful and bizarre backdrops. I digress. The term made popular largely by tweens on Snapchat has elevated to “word” status because its meaning transcends age, gender, geography, and even professional boundaries. In fact, it’s even applicable in the world of corporate finance and cloud technology. In many ways, selfies are about user empowerment, self-sustainability, and overall independence. Selfies are practical, intuitive, and extremely efficient; the same adjectives that finance and technology leaders use to describe cloud CPM software. One of the most significant obstacles that corporate finance teams face today is IT intervention in financial processes. We frequently hear the same message, each time louder and clearer than the last, from the new breed of CFOs, to a more agile approach to the five-year planning process, to better financial planning in today’s data-driven culture. Corporate finance teams want to be less dependent on others like IT and more self-reliant and sustainable. That means efficient planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes and visual analytics using solutions that promote user independence and self-guidance. Selfies are about collaboration too. Remember: A selfie never happened if it didn’t happen on Facebook. Cloud CPM software turns otherwise finance-exclusive processes like consolidation into a team sport by making scorecards and dashboards visually intuitive and easily accessible for employees. Compare that to the selfie, which turns otherwise lone adventures into visually appealing self-portraits for all of your followers and friends to enjoy! No wonder they’ve both crossed the chasm into mainstream use.
