This is Belvedere Castle in Central Park, New York City. It’s located near the Delacorte Theater and the 79th Street Transverse Road. What’s that — “why does NYC need a castle?” Um… why not ;-)

The Story

Since I was a child I can remember being enamored with Belvedere Castle. It’s simply one of the most extraordinary structures, in Central Park. It’s majestic in its stature. Since the castle sits high on Vista Rock – overlooking the Shakespeare Garden, Turtle Pond and the Great Lawn.

In all my years of living in New York City I have never been inside the castle. I have only ever stood on the observation deck. To enjoy the view.

The History

Belvedere Castle was built-in 1869. And unfortunately it’s not a real castle nor was it ever. Belvedere Castle is a Victorian folly — a structure designed Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, primarily for decoration. But it does serve as a weather station – Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS).
