YouTube TV Library and Live Guide Update Gives More Control to the Users

YouTube TV is rolling out updates for its Library and Live TV services today. Some users already have access to the updated Live Guide, which offers recommendations on what to watch, a new design, and a more traditional grid showing what’s on now and what’s upcoming.

Updates to the Library started rolling out today and will continue over the next few months. The updated Live Guide offers users more information about each movie or live show and has a more straightforward design.

The new guide now includes a row of curated recommendations at the top, a more compact grid that displays more channels and programming on the screen.

In a blog post, the Head of Design for Primetime Channels and YouTube TV, Esther Ahn, explained that the new, more compact grid allows users to take in more information while scrolling less.

Ahn also claims that the update simplified recording content from the guide for its users because it requires fewer steps. The post says the Live Guide makes it more visible to users if a show or movie is already saved to the digital video recorder.

Users can now manage their content using the updated Library organizational tools and improved filters. Instead of the side navigation, there’s a row of filters for specific categories, such as movies, series, or most watched.

Users can also use the new “Catch up on your favorites” shelf to reach their favorite content.

Members have built up their libraries over time, but programs they were interested in several years ago might no longer be relevant to themEsther Ahn

Ahn went on to say,

The more their libraries grew, the less usable they became due to the lack of tools to organize their shows, movies, and sports

YouTube TV said the reason behind the update of its Library and Live Guide is because they’re the most used pages by YouTube TV watchers. The company added new side panels with shortcuts for both features, such as “Add to Library,” with a “Set Reminder” shortcut on the way.

After this update, users will have more control over how they explore and find content on YouTube TV.

Decision fatigue is real when you turn on your TV with even more apps and channels than ever before. Viewers are looking for easier ways to find the content most relevant to them, whether it’s jumping into a live game or seeing what’s trending right nowEsther Ahn

While these seem like minor changes and design tweaks, they give a competitive advantage to YouTube TV by making the product more straightforward.

Looking at the evolution of Live TV and rivals like Hulu, which has a new advertising beta testing, YouTube TV is always seeking additional ways to attract new cord-cutters to its service.

YouTube TV mentioned upcoming changes that would bring more interactivity and flexibility during live playback and those that would make it easier to switch between user profiles. The company didn’t say when to expect the new features.
