Walmart just launched its very first metaverse experiences on Roblox as America’s largest supermarket chain is seeking to set its footprint in this up-and-coming industry.
In a press release published yesterday, the firm revealed further details about the initiative, which consists of two different experiences, one called “Walmart Land” and the other “Walmart’s Universe of Play”.
The Walmart Land is an island shaped like the company’s logo that features a blimp, a ferris wheel, multiple slides, and various other entertaining decorations along with activities that users can engage with such as live concerts and contests.
Roblox users can visit Walmart Land and buy apparel and other types of merchandise for their virtual characters and they can participate in the firm’s contests and events to win these digital assets as well.
Within Walmart Land, users will encounter three different experiences they can enjoy. First, there is the Electric Island, which is a place where users can entertain themselves with several music-related activities including dance challenges, a DJ booth, and a Netflix trivia experience.
Moreover, the House of Style is a fashion-focused experience that allows users to play several games including strike-a-pose, which consists of mimicking what a mannequin is doing. This experience also features a roller-skating rink.
Finally, the third experience is called the Electric Fest. This is a place where live events will be hosted such as concerts and performances from top artists.
Walmart’s Metaverse Also Has a Place for Kids
The second metaverse space that Walmart has launched is called Universe of Play and it is designed to cater to a much younger audience and includes games featuring some of today’s most popular cartoon characters such as Paw Patrol and L.O.L Surprise!
Moreover, players will have the chance to earn and collect toys and other similar virtual items by participating in the platform’s experiences and there will be multiple adventures available for users to engage with so the little ones can spend time in this exciting new game.
In regards to the launch of these two metaverse experiences, William White, the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, commented: “Roblox is one of the fastest growing and largest platforms in the metaverse, and we know our customers are spending loads of time there. So, we’re focusing on creating new and innovative experiences that excite them, something we’re already doing in the communities where they live, and now, the virtual worlds where they play.”
Users can access Walmart Land and Universe of Play for free by downloading the Roblox app on their mobile phones. Both Android and iOS devices are supported. They can also access the metaverse platform by using their personal computers through the web-based version of Roblox.
Walmart Continues to Set in Motion Its Plans to Enter the Web3
In January this year, media outlets reported that Walmart filed seven different trademark applications for various types of digital assets. Back then, the company commented that it is “exploring how emerging technologies may shape future shopping experiences”.
Multiple firms have been experiencing with the creation of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for various purposes including loyalty programs and as a potential new revenue stream as those items can be sold within metaverse platforms.
Roblox (RBLX) provides a space in which creators can develop virtual experiences. The company attracts over 50 million daily users, most of which are young individuals who engage with the different environments other parties have created.
Creators are compensated for their effort as users have to pay a fee to access the experiences. They do this by purchasing Roblox’s native currency – Robux. On average, creators earn around 29 cents for every dollar a user spends on their experiences.
