Tesla, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, is planning to increase the price of the “full self-driving (FSD) beta software. FSD is an advanced diver assistance system that has aided Tesla’s dominance in the EV market.

Tesla raises the price for FSD beta software to $15,000

On Sunday, the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, announced that the electric vehicle manufacturer would raise the value of its FSD beta software to $15,000 on September 5. Musk said that the orders made before September 5 would be fulfilled at the current price of $12,000.

Musk also gave Tesla owners insight into how the FSD beta software would work. The executive said that Tesla owners could upgrade the cars they already own using the FSD beta software within two minutes.

Musk did not disclose whether there would be a scheduled price increase for the subscription option for FSD. The current subscription rate for the FSD software sits at $199 per month.

Tesla’s ADAS has been a controversial technology. It is not the first time that the price of the technology has increased, and it might not be the last time it will happen. In January this year, Tesla raised the price of the technology from $10,000 to $12,000.

In July, Musk also issued another statement saying that the price of FSD was “ridiculously cheap” given the high value of the service it offered. The executive also plans that this technology will come with full autonomous features by the end of the year instead of some automated driving features.

Tesla’s vehicles that come fully equipped with the FSD technology are 100,000. During the first half of 2022, the number has remained flat, showing that there could be little interest in the product than in the previous months.

FSD technology has been controversial over the past year. Despite the name alluding that the technology creates self-driving cars, it does not necessarily mean that the cars will drive themselves. A human driver is needed to stay alert and control the vehicle when needed.

The confusion about Tesla’s FSD technology was why the California Department of Motor Vehicles accused Tesla of providing fake advertisements regarding the FSD technology and the autopilot ADAS software.

On Sunday, Musk also created another Twitter post that the price change in the FSD beta software would be effective after version 10.69.2. Tesla started releasing this version on Saturday, and it is already receiving a broad reach.

This software’s new version boasts multiple upgrades, such as unprotected left turns. It also comes with a 17% upgrade on the velocity error for bicyclists and pedestrians. It also features a “deep lane guidance” mechanism that allows it to switch lanes easily.

Tesla released its financial results for the second quarter a few weeks ago. The financial results showed that the company needed additional cash to support its China operations amid the COVID-19 lockdown. To do this, the EV manufacturer sold its Bitcoin holdings.
