netflix games

Netflix appears to be taking very seriously its decision to incorporate mobile games into its legacy streaming platform for subscribers to enjoy as indicated by the company’s latest moves including the incorporation of handles and the launch of original games tied to its most popular series and movies.

Back in November 2021, the company announced that it will be introducing its very first mobile games for both iOS and Android devices. The list of games was initially small with only 5 titles available including two related to its popular original series Stranger Things.

However, the company has been progressively incorporating more and more games into its portfolio and now boasts more than 30 titles going from strategy to sports. Some of the most popular alternatives that are now available within the platform include Exploding Kittens, a fairly entertaining board game, a party favorite called Heads Up!, and a great selection for waiting rooms including Teeter (Up) and Shooting Hoops.

All of these games are available for Netflix (NFLX) subscribers by simply accessing the mobile app of the popular streaming platform. Judging by the number of new titles being incorporated and the effort that the Los Gatos-based company is putting into making gaming a relevant part of its service offering, the firm seems to be serious about becoming a go-to platform for more than just watching movies and series.

Netflix Launches In-House Gaming Studio in Finland

In June this year, Netflix incorporated several new games related to its platform’s “Originals” including one for The Queen’s Gambit and another one for the beloved heist crime Spanish TV show “La Casa de Papel” in which gamers have the chance to plan and execute the robbery of a Casino in Monaco.

Just four days ago, the company announced that it will be establishing a game studio in Helsinki, Finland as part of its vision to build a “world-class” team to bring the best original games.

One of the most attractive features of Netflix games is that there are no ads and no required in-app purchases to advance in the games. This separates the firm from a large number of its competitors that monetize their products by using these schemes. For users, constant adverts are particularly tiresome.

“It’s still early days, and we have much more work to do to deliver a great games experience on Netflix. Creating a game can take years, so I’m proud to see how we’re steadily building the foundation of our games studios in our first year, and look forward to sharing what we produce in the coming years”, commented Amir Rahimi, the Vice President of Game Studios for the video streaming platform in regards to the decision.

Desta – An Example of How Serious Netflix is Taking Mobile Gaming

“Desta: The Memories Between” has received a positive review recently from writer Ash Parrish from The Verge who described the game as a “technically impressive and fun” title to play.

The game is about a character that comes home after being years away. During his absence, the relationship with his friends and family deteriorated and he is forced to deal with those issues by engaging in dodgeball matches.

These matches take place in the character’s dreams and demand a certain level of strategy and planning to manage to hit the enemies so their HP can be progressively drained. As Desta progressively amends the relationship with his peers, they can accompany him in the next matches.

Some of the most entertaining elements of the game include the possibility of choosing which friends to bring for each match based on their unique individual skills and developing new abilities that can be quite useful as the game progresses to new and more complicated levels.

Titles like Desta are a great example of how series Netflix is taking this pivot to mobile gaming and the fact that the company is investing in the creation of an in-house studio – a bold move to say the least – is also evidence that this is part of the company’s core strategy and vision to keep growing its subscriber base and amplify its portfolio of enticing products and services.
