ChatGPT app which has recently been launched in iOS only is receiving its first significant update which comes with features such as native iPad compatibility as well as support for using ChatGPT with Siri and Shortcuts.

OpenAI Levels Up the Chatbot App

After the App Store was flooded with clones of the famous chatbot for several months, OpenAI announced the release of an official iOS app that enables customers to use its well-liked AI chatbot on the move.

ChatGPT app was released as free to use with the ability to sync users’ history across their devices Additionally, the app incorporated Whisper, the free speech recognition software by OpenAI, allowing voice input.

The app also has a premium version named ChatGPT Plus whose subscribers receive unique access to GPT-4’s features, early access to updates, and quicker response times for $20 a month.

Less than a month later, OpenAI has rolled out a new version that natively supports iPad which enables it to take on the entire tablet interface to display full screen instead of as an iPhone-sized app running on a bigger display which was the case prior to this upgrade.

Additionally, the version comes with the ability to drag and drop individual messages from the chat interface to other applications.

The update also enables users to use Siri to call ChatGPT after which they can provide prompts by speech as enabled by Whisper. They can also use Apple Shortcuts to interact with the chatbot which enables them to create a ChatGPT query in Apple’s Shortcuts to launch a new chat and incorporate that into ShortCut’s automation system.

This means that users will be able to, for example, make your preferred prompts into Shortcuts and have those carry out an additional task once the query is finished, such as saving the result to another program.


Not only do the updates increase the adoptability of the app, but they also improve the user experience which also raises ChatGPT’s level of accessibility and ease of use.

ChatGPT App Tops the Charts

The update is likely to encourage more downloads of the ChatGPT app, which shot to the top of the App Store after its launch with 500,000 installs in less than a week. This bested Microsoft and Bing’s downloads over the same period after releasing a competing chatbot despite having gained popularity due to ChatGPT’s debut.

According to estimates from data.ai, a third-party app intelligence company, the app has 7.3 million iOS installs worldwide and has been in the top five in the United States since its release.


Moreover, the app has a 4.8-star rating, which is very difficult to achieve, across 421,000 ratings and reviews in the United States, where it is still the No.1 productivity app and the top app in 31 countries across the globe.

The new feature comes at a time of explosive growth for the app within the Apple ecosystem.

Initially, OpenAI released the app for users in the US only but shortly after, it expanded its reach to 11 more nations, including France, Germany, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Korea, the U.K.

It then expanded further to accommodate over 30 additional countries like Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Estonia, Ghana, India, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Nauru, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Slovenia, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates.

While OpenAI promised that the app will also be launching on Android devices soon, the company has been preoccupied with improving the iOS version. ChatGPT app has so far received 4 updates in the span of less than a month.

The app has received updates that have enhanced its voice input, bettered the chat history management, and even improved battery efficiency. At this rate, Android users will have to wait a little longer for their version to roll out.
