BeReal Wins App of the YearApple’s list of winning apps for 2022’s App Store Awards is out. The event highlights apps demonstrating creative design, positive cultural impact, innovative technology, and exceptional quality.

Sixteen apps and games from the worldwide community of developers stood out in the free and paid categories of this year’s most downloaded app chart. Apple’s global App Store editorial team prepared the chart comprising the top apps for all the Apple platforms, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch.

The French social networking app BeReal took the top spot as the app of the year 2022 for iPhone users. GoodNotes 5, a note-taking app, won the award for the best app for iPad.

BeReal beats social giants like TikTok and instagram

BeReal, launched in 2020, became the top app by pushing away the mega social media giants like Twitter, TikTok and Instagram. The app gained popularity due to its distinctive format.

BeReal requires the users to post a picture using the front and back cameras of the phone within two minutes of receiving a notification from the app at random times throughout the day. In the awards blog post, Apple described it as an app that delivers:

an authentic look into the lives of their family and friends.

Toca Life World (an app for kids) and WakeOut (a workout app) were the top apps of the last two years. Thus, a social media app winning the ace spot is a stark departure from the previous two years’ title wins.

Other Winners

A family tree exploration app, MacFamilyTree 10 by Synium Software GmbH, emerged as the winning Mac app for 2022. Vix Streaming, a streaming service app by TelevisaUnivision Interactive, bagged the top spot for the ace Apple TV app to elevate Spanish stories. Apple Watch app of the year was awarded to Gentler Streak, a health and fitness tracker app by Gentler Stories.

Whereas, in the gaming category, Electronic Arts’ Apex Legends Mobile made it to the top of the iPhone games list while XD. Network Inc.’s Moncage was crowned top position in the same category for iPad.

Other than above, Inscryption from Devolver for Mac, Studio Drydock’s Wylde Flowers for Apple Arcade, and El Hijo from HandyGames for Apple TV also bagged top positions in the respective gaming charts. Also, the title of China app of the year was presented to the League of Legends Esports Manager by Shenzhen Tencent Tianyou Technology.

Last year, Apple introduced an additional section under the name “Apps that brought us together” at its Annual Global Apple Awards Event. Likewise, they added a section called “Cultural Impact” to highlight the apps that could leave a lasting impact on people’s lives and influence cultures.

The list included the How We Feel app by Feel Project for keeping logs of daily emotional and mental health Home Stories Project app by Rise-Home Stories Project for showcasing housing injustices and their influence on people of a different color. The list also mentioned the Locket widget by Locket Lab for allowing live image sharing among friends and family, Waterllama by Vitali Mogylevet for monitoring personal hydration, and Inua- A Story in Ice and Time by ARTE Experience to reveal historical events of Inuit tradition.
