The e-commerce giant Amazon could be preparing to build a ChatGPT-like artificial intelligence (AI) interface for its web store. Speculations have been rising following two job listings that were first spotted by Bloomberg which unambiguously reveal the company’s intentions to “reinvent” its search feature.

Is Amazon Turning to AI to Supercharge Search Feature?

The first job listing is for a “Sr Technical Program Manager” to help with the e-commerce company’s goal of making step function enhancements with the application of advanced machine learning (ML) on extensive datasets.

“We are working on a new AI-first initiative to re-architect and reinvent the way we do search through the use of extremely large scale next-generation deep learning techniques,” the job listing reads in part.

Candidates for this role would expect an annual compensation between $119,000 and $231,400 based on the applicant’s location around the world. However, the software engineer must have at least seven years of experience working with engineering teams directly.

For this position, Amazon prefers a candidate with over half a decade of expertise in project management principles, including aspects such as scope, timeline, budget, and quality, as well as risk mitigation and critical path navigation. In addition to demonstrating proficiency in overseeing cross-functional teams, establishing enduring procedures, and synchronizing release timelines.

The second AI-based job listing is for a “Sr SDE, Machine Learning (ML), Amazon Search” attracting between $134,500 and $261,500 in compensation per year. In this listing, Amazon described the new initiative as “a once-in-a-generation transformation for Search.”

Amazon said that the reinvented Search feature is needed for deployment to its customers the right way.

“We are reimagining Amazon Search with an interactive conversational experience that helps you find answers to product questions, perform product comparisons, receive personalized product suggestions, and so much more, to easily find the perfect product for your needs,” the second job posting said.

The two postings combined make it obvious that Amazon is preparing high-level alterations to its search feature that will be powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Improvements On the Search Feature Comes in the Wake of Bedrock AI

The timing of the job postings is unlikely to be coincidental, as Amazon recently debuted its own “Bedrock” artificial intelligence (AI) foundational models which were designed to function as a “serverless” AI service – a framework on which customers can build and train their own ChatGPT-like models.

Titan, Amazon’s own AI chatbot was announced together with Bedrock with the company’s vice president Bratin Saha confirming that they have been using “a fine-tuned version of the chatbot to bring up search results on the e-commerce website.

However, this does not directly confirm the job listings are related to Titan or Bedrock. Amazon had not responded to a request for comment or shed more light on the matter.

Either way, the timing for such development comes as no surprise as companies around the world race to release cutting-edge AI tools. The AI craze has continued to thaw since late last year when the Microsoft-based OpenAI launched its ChatGPT service.

The push for AI software tools appears to be bearing fruit with Microsoft sprinkling AI across its app empire including on its Edge browser and Microsoft 365 products. Experts from the industry believe AI will impact every sector of the global sector if it has not started to do so already.

In the journalism sector, media platforms are experimenting with AI-generated content and reporting – crypto and blockchain included.

In the crypto and blockchain industry, AI is disrupting quite a lot starting with community interaction, trading, and learning to content creation.
