We’re in the era where mobile devices have taken over the way we share and access data. By 2016, one-billion people will use smartphones, many for work purposes.
If you haven’t already, you’ll soon be making the shift to a mobile-first workforce. That means it’s more important than ever to have access to decision-driving data right on your mobile device.
Our customers download and publish more than 8,000 reports a day. We are in the business of bringing critical data visualizations to mobile, so that means it’s also our business to be sure that data on your phone is safe and secure.
Below is a list of steps to discuss with your team to ensure your device is secure, and your enterprise’s precious data is safe.
Consider A Mobile Device Management Solution
A mobile workforce demands a proper mobile device management (MDM) solution to protect valuable data and information across the organization. For the enterprise, an MDM solution offers end-to-end security managed by your IT department.
MDM solutions link to and synchronize mobile device records to ensure there are no unwanted or unauthorized viewers attempting to access your company data.
With so many different MDM solutions available, Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Mobility Management Suites details different vendors and platforms in the MDM field. This research gives you a solid foundation to begin your conversations with your IT department and other stakeholders about the need for an MDM solution.
Protect Individual Devices
The bring-your-own device (BYOD) workforce is here to stay, so be sure you know how to secure your device and protect your company. Make sure the applications you install on your phone are safe, secure in the event the device is misplaced.
Below are a series of steps to run through with your team to help protect your device.
- Set passcodes on all devices. This is usually found in your settings menu.
- Enable your device’s GPS tracker should the device be misplaced or stolen.
- Enable remote wipe features. If your device’s passcode is entered incorrectly a certain number of times all data will be automatically erased, or if the phone is lost / stolen it can be remotely wiped clean. This option is also usually in the settings menu.
Work with your IT team to consider specific mobile application management (MAM) processes as well, such as requiring your workforce to sandbox applications for an extra layer of security. Sandboxing means only certain applications and data can be accessed from certain networks. So, if you add certain work-related apps to one sandbox, those can only be accessed when designated by the administrator.
Secure Mobile Data
A BYOD workforce means devices store valuable company data, and they must be secure to limit the risk of vulnerabilities—whether employees are at work or at home. If you are using an app to store and share company data, make sure your team protects that data correctly.
Create a source for white-listed apps that are secure enough to input company data. One way to verify these apps are secure is to collaborate with your company’s IT department and ask them the following questions.
- Does the app have a security platform built-in?
- Does the app have a device-level PIN or passcode?
- How do I know if I am on a secure network when I access data?
- How do I know whether the person I am sharing data with is accessing over a secure network?
Once you have established your white-listed apps, explore what is happening behind the scenes in their server room, and what policies they have in place in terms of data security.
