Colorful AppleSo another Apple event came and went today, and the announcements were pretty on par with what was expected. Two new phones were announced: the iPhone 5S, and a new, lower-cost model called the iPhone 5C that comes in bright colors and has a plastic exterior.

However, what wasn’t expected was what happened to the iPhone 5. In the past, when Apple has released a new phone, they lowered the price of the previous model. But because of the lower price of the iPhone 5C, the iPhone 5 will no longer be available. The 8 GB iPhone 4S will now be free when you sign a 2-year contract, so if you don’t want to spring for the newest models, you still have that option.

If the new phones don’t get you excited, here are a few other things that were announced:

  • Apple is on pace to ship its 700 millionth iOS device next month.
  • iWork, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, iPhoto, and iMovie will now be free with the purchase of a new iOS device.
  • iOS 7 will be available free for download September 18. It will be compatible with iPhone models 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, the iPad mini, and the 5th-generation iPod Touch.
  • iTunes Radio will launch with iOS 7 on September 18.

But I’m sure most of you are at least a little curious about the brand new iPhones and what Apple has in store for us, so here’s an overview:

iPhone 5C

  • The iPhone 5C is Apple’s new, lower-cost iPhone that they say is “more fun, and more colorful, than anything we’ve ever made before.”
  • It will come in in green, yellow, blue, white, and tangerine. There are wallpapers that match the color of the exterior for an “entire experience of color.”
  • It has the same physical dimensions as the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S, but it’s made of a soft silicone instead of aluminum.
  • The phone will have a 4″ retina display, A6 chip, and a steel reinforced structure.
  • It features the same lightning connector as the iPhone 5, iPad mini, and iPad.
  • The battery is slightly larger than that of the iPhone 5.
  • The iSight camera has 3x zoom and a new Facetime HD camera.
  • The rear camera will be 8-megapixel.
  • It will support more LTE bands than any other smartphone.
  • Price: $99 for the 16GB model, $199 for the 32GB model (with contract).
  • Availability: pre-orders start September 13, on sale September 20.

iPhone 5S

  • The iPhone 5S was called the “most forward-thinking phone we’ve ever launched” by Apple.
  • This phone is also getting more colorful: in addition to the black and white other iPhone have come in, they’re also introducing a champagne-gold color.
  • The new Apple A7 processor makes the phone 5 times faster than the iPhone 5.
  • A new motion sensor called M7 and a new API for developers will bring a “new generation of health and fitness apps.”
  • There’s a new fingerprint sensor in the home button and a feature called TouchID that will let you unlock your phone with just a touch. You can also touch the sensor instead of entering your AppleID password when downloading an app.
  • Improvements to the camera include larger sensors, upgraded image-processing software, a dual-LED flash, and a new “burst mode.”
  • Availability: on sale September 20
  • Pricing: $199, $299, and $399 (with contract) for the 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB models, respectively.
