IoT described so my grandmother can understand…
If you’re reading this, then you probably already know IoT stands for The Internet of Things.
Even armed with this knowledge some basics can still be uncovered. The Internet of Things is also referred to as the Internet of Everything, but we’ll address that later.
Let’s start with the standard Wikipedia definition of IoT and then simplify. “IoT is the network of physical objects – devices, vehicles, buildings and other items – embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.”
Here are the only three things you need to know to understand what an IoT device is in most social circles:
- A devices which has connectivity. (simply put, it is connected to the Internet)
- The device either creates data (think of your Apple Watch which measures your health statistics)
- Integrates with a software system to interpret the data and then make decisions or take action (the analysis can be highly sophisticated or as simple as responding to a set of preferences or a user generated profile
That is the basics of IoT!
So here is an example. You walk five miles which triggers your wearable device to report your vitals to a health application which you subscribe to. The application analyzes the new data and compares it to your history and can predict that you need an increase of protein. You then get a push notification on your phone asking if you want to order food on the way home. The system knows your workout is over since your transportation mode has changed from walking to driving.
