Offices can get loud. Heated debates, celebrations, a crowd  of developers gathering around the latest viral video and laughing their heads off at it.

You’d think the last thing you want is something else to interrupt the beautiful sound of a team zeroed in during its most Zen state of productivity. But there is one thing.

The gong.

Cutting through commotion better than the buzzer at a Knicks game, the jarring sound of a gong ringing out in the office is not only a surefire way to get attention, it’s one with a great purpose: to celebrate wins.

We have one. It sits right in the center of the TinyHR office. When it goes off, everyone knows why. It means we’ve done something great. Got a new client? Ring the gong. Got two? Ring it twice. Got three? We’ll ring that thing all day long!

Why do we do it? There are three principles behind why we do it. I think you’ll appreciate them.

1. Announce your wins: You want your wins to get noticed. You want everyone on the team to know about them. So make a noise that cuts through every other sound an office can make. Ring that gong.

2. No win is too small: Every new client gets a strike of the gong, whether big, small, or headquartered on Mars. It doesn’t matter to us. We’re a startup, it’s a client, and that’s exciting. Our big clients yield more revenue, our small clients give us credibility and the cache for building our business. No matter who they are, every client is a win, and we celebrate each one.

3. Everyone participates: It takes a lot of hands to land a new client. Marketing put the fuel into the trial funnel, PR helped get out the good word, account managers worked with potential customers, and designers and developers made sure you had a superior product to sell. No matter where the win comes from, everyone contributed to it. Everyone gets to ring the gong.

Now, if you have a high-volume, self-registration model, the constant ringing in your ears could become a touch distracting. I get it. One way around this is to schedule an end-of-day gong-o-rama. You can even add a digital component to the gong by having your sales tool automatically send out an email for closed deals featuring a subject line that reads, “GONG:” and is followed by the name of the new client. This is also a great solution for remote staffers, whether they’re telecommuting, working from other offices, or are out on the road. Even better, with an email, people can Reply All and pile on the good vibes.

Ring that gong!
