The futuristic technology that it is, the Internet of Things (IoT) is bound to redefine what we thought was possible in the area of artificial intelligence and personal digital assistance. When mobile devices form a part of an IoT network, the sky is the limit for the amazing things that can be made to happen to improve daily life conveniences. In this post, we see how typical habits of people can be detected by the component devices of an IoT and used to reach the next level of sophistication in ‘smart’ environments. These are a few examples and there could be scope for many more.


Tracking tastes and preferences

Picture this – a person has for the past 2 weeks, been listening to jazz music in the evenings and classical in the early mornings. It would be great if the stereo system at home can recognize this recurring pattern and automatically create playlist suggestions based on the time of the day. Or tune into the right radio channel at the said time. Better, if the same could be communicated to the person’s mobile device as well. Another example could be a person getting a reminder on their phone when it’s time for her favorite TV show.

Tracking daily routines and corresponding needs

If someone typically does a workout at 7am every morning, the phone could track this by means of various fitness activity sensors that it has. Based on the information the phone sends out about the activity done, smart fridges and other food storage containers can detect if the nutritional supplements needed for the same are out of stock or beyond their expiry dates and also place orders for the delivery of the same!

Tracking weather and location

Knowing when you have moved to a new city and monitoring the weather conditions therein, can help smart networked devices do a number of things for you. From suggesting places nearby to buy warm clothing to automatically increasing the temperature your air conditioner sets itself to, your home and appliances could become your personal comfort assistants!

Tracking lifestyle trends

Are you someone who does an outdoor trip every weekend? Have your phone suggest new trails each weekend and things you would need to carry based on the terrain and weather. Have the same communicated to smart devices at home that alert you on what items you need to stock up on. They will also automatically turn off or set their properties to suit your absence away from home for the specified duration. Travelling never needed such less preparation!


Tracking health and providing support

If a diabetic person is stepping out of her home, have her wearable glucose-monitoring device trigger an alert on the phone – an alert to carry insulin shots with her as her blood glucose may tend to go high in the next few hours.

So these were a few examples on smart homes and smart lifestyles using a powerful combination of IoT with mobility. Tracking ‘habits’ would become the buzzword in the future as we try to make networked devices ‘intelligent’ and ‘aware’ enough to tell us, even before we realize, what we need and when we need it. Even better, actually help us meet the need with minimal manual intervention!
