Ben Affleck appeared last night on Real Time With Bill Maher to promote his new movie Gone Girl. Instead, the Academy Award winning director spent a majority of his time on the show arguing with the TV host about “Islamophobia.”
Affleck became quickly offended when author Sam Harris called Islam the “mother lode of bad ideas.” The actor argued that Harris and Bill Maher were claiming that all people who practice Islam are terrorists, simple because a small subset of people use the religion to perform acts of terrorism.
According to the actor: “You are saying that Islamaphobia is not a real thing?… It’s gross, it’s racist. It’s like saying ‘that shifty Jew…’ That’s an ugly thing to say … How about the more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punish women, who just want to go to school, have some sandwiches, and don’t do any of the things you say all Muslims do?”
In response to Affleck’s accusations Maher said that Islam is the “only religion that acts like the Mafia.”

Gone Girl took in $38 million at the weekend box office, a fortunate fact consider Ben Affleck spent almost zero time promoting the film among his Islamic support on Real Time With Bill Maher.
