The time we spend at home is absolutely precious and there’s no greater shame than when we head back to our loved ones after a full day in the office only to continue thinking about every decision we made during the day, every interaction we had with colleagues and what’s to come tomorrow.

When you get home from work, the office should be the last thing on your mind. Scrap that – it shouldn’t be on your mind whatsoever.

But that is far easier said than done, and in this post, I’ve got 6 tips I rely on day-in, day-out to stop myself from thinking about work when I should be enjoying time with those closest to me.

1. Go for a long walk

This is probably my favourite winding-down measure. We’re blessed with beautiful walking hotspots in the UK, and I like nothing more than hitting those that are on my doorstep once I’ve downed tools. A good, brisk walk offers just the right amount of exercise to clear your mind and revitalize you.

2. Switch off everything

When you return home after a long day, turn off your work phone, avoid the temptation to check email and switch off any other device that is linked to your job.

It may seem difficult at first, so reliant are we these days on technology and its endless notifications, but switching the things off that demand your attention is an absolutely vital and obvious way to rid your mind of the office while at home.

Do it every day and you’ll soon wonder why you were so attached to those devices and notifications in the first place.

3. Manage your to-do list effectively

Running a to-do list is one of the most important productivity hacks going, but if you don’t manage yours effectively, it’ll forever be on your mind. And that means work will forever be on your mind.

Set yourself deadlines for tasks that are realistic and achievable. Review your to-do list each morning and, if you think you’ve overstretched yourself for the day, shuffle things around. Over promising and under delivering will play on your mind all night, but a fully ticked-off to-do list will enable you to relax.

4. Have a distinctive work wardrobe

The routine of getting home from work and changing into non-work attire is more important than you may think. If you fail to do this or consistently wear the same clothes at work as you do at home, you’ll never feel like you’ve left the office. Keep workwear where it belongs.

5. Solve a problem at home

Give your mind something else to focus on other than that big meeting you have tomorrow morning and you’ll quickly find that you forget all about impending work commitments.

One of the best ways to do this is to identify a problem that needs solving at home and focus your thoughts and energy there. The leaky tap in the kitchen or untidy garage that badly needs a clear out are examples of problems that need solving but which are far removed from anything you’ll be doing at work.

6. Schedule time to think about work issues

There’s no getting away from the fact that certain work issues will require your brain power once you’re at home. Meetings will need to be prepared for and if you’re due to have a tricky conversation with a colleague the next day, you’ll need to do some planning.

Chances are, you’ll end up thinking about such things constantly, but if you schedule a specific time to think through work issues – and only allow yourself that time to do so – you’ll prevent them getting in the way of your personal life.


Work shouldn’t dominate your life. If you’re finding that it creeps into every spare minute you have away from the office, the 6 tips above should help you destress, unwind and remember that there are far more important things in life than earning a crust.
