So you and your friends have just started a new business and you’re excited to get your ideas off the ground. However, it’s crucial not to neglect your social media efforts – even if your product hasn’t launched yet! However, startups and small business ventures don’t usually have tons of extra money to spend on advertising, so often that’s out of the picture. Not to worry, there are still plenty of ways to reach your audience without spending a dime.
- Show your personality
One of the biggest draws of startups (and entrepreneurship in general) is the passion of the workers. Big corporations generally have a negative perception of being jaded, stuffy, and old-fashioned, whereas startups are seen as exciting and innovative. Play to that strength!
Film a walk-through of your office, interview your staff, and show your viewers why you’re interesting people.
You don’t need special effects or thousands of dollars of fancy recording equipment. Show your passion and commitment to your customers and they’ll know you’re the real deal.
- Be very active on social media
With the way Facebook and Twitter’s algorithms have changed, it’s becoming nearly impossible for people to actually see your posts. Facebook has reported less than 2% organic reach, with Twitter on the decline as well. The only real way to get around this is to be more active.
We’re going to be honest; not many people will see your posts at first, but the more likes and followers you accumulate, the more reach you’ll have. We recommend using Twitter’s advanced search function to respond to people talking about your industry.
- Find social media platforms that work for you
Twitter and Facebook work just fine for the majority of businesses, but there’s a wide world of social media platforms out there. Try to find one or two specialized social networks that just seem to mesh with your product.
Are there a lot of visuals associated with your product? Tumblr or Instagram might be the right medium for you.
Comfortable with making videos? Vine or YouTube will let you showcase your company’s potential.
Remember, different networks attract different audiences. Finding the right channel early on can have a major impact on how much excitement you can generate.
