“The Honey Badger just takes what it wants, it doesn’t care. Look, the Honey Badger is fearless, it doesn’t care.”

The ever-popular YouTube video about the Honey Badger is catching fire, and has seeped its way into popular culture, as only a YouTube video can. Along with that, Tyrann Mathieu, defensive back for the LSU Tigers, has gained the reputation associated with the Honey Badger video. Tyrann Mathieu just takes what he wants, and that’s the football.

If there was case to be made for a defensive player to get a Heisman Trophy, I think Mathieu has made as good a case for himself as he could. The diminutive defensive back has swarmed offenses and forced fumbles, caught two interceptions, broken up passes and returned punts for touchdowns. Mathieu’s punt returns have gotten a slightly stagnant Tiger offense started two times when they needed it. First, Mathieu ran a punt back for LSU in their game against Arkansas. That got the offense started that resulted in a beatdown of the Razorbacks.

Next, Mathieu returned a punt for a touchdown in the SEC Championship game against Georgia. Georgia was up 10-0 in the early minutes of the game, and it would have been more if the Georgia receiving core had caught more passes. However, the Honey Badger just took what he wanted: this time, a touchdown. He had an electrifying punt return for touchdown to narrow the gap to 10-7. LSU went on from there.

I hope Mathieu comes on strong on January 9, because I’m rooting for the Tigers all the way. I want LSU to have a 14-0 season, and I think this is their year. Geaux Tigers!
