ESPN is reporting the Florida Gators have decided to severe ties with embattled football coach Will Muschamp at the end of the season.
Muschamp is expected to be allowed to coach the Gators’ final two games of this season, then be allowed to step down after four seasons. In that time, Muschamp has composed a 27-20 overall record and is currently 17-15 in SEC play.
Florida fell to South Carolina 23-20 in overtime on Saturday, dropping the team to 2-6 over its last eight home games. All this comes on the heels finishing last season at 4-8, the program’s first losing season since 1979.
The 43-year-old Muschamp replaced Urban Meyer as Florida coach after the 2010 season. Before that, he served as defensive coordinator at Texas and was widely viewed as the program’s coach in waiting.
After a rocky 7-6 start at Florida, Muschamp led the Gators to a 11-2 finish in his second season with the team rising to as high as No. 2 in the country in the AP rankings.
All that now sees like a lifetime ago, with fans regularly calling for his ouster and lamenting the once powerful program’s sudden fall from grace. The catcalls became even more pronounced over recent times when the Gators were routed by Missouri 43-12 during homecoming week.
Florida bounced back to upset Georgia 38-20 two-weeks ago, giving the Muschamp his first win over his alma mater in four attempts.
