North Carolina sports betting was legalized in early March 2024, making it the 30th state plus DC to regulate online sportsbooks. North Carolina Sports Betting Updates
North Carolina permits online sports betting but prohibits online casino gambling and online poker. Sports betting became legal in March 2024 following the signing of House Bill 347 by Gov. Roy Cooper in June 2023. The bill authorized up to 12 online sportsbooks, which the North Carolina State Lottery Commission must license. Eight licenses have been granted so far.
Although North Carolina residents can bet on sports such as in-state college teams, there is an active bill that seeks to ban professional betting on college players. Further, parimutuel betting on horse racing, daily fantasy sports, lottery games, and casino-style games at tribal casinos are all legal in the state of North Carolina.
Since sportsbooks in North Carolina came online in March 2024, over $3.49 billion has been handled according to state sportsbook revenue data. That has equated to a windfall for the state tax coffers of $67.55 million.
Reviews of the Best Online Sportsbooks in North Carolina
Are you still wondering which operator is the best for you as an NC bettor? We’ve reviewed our operators and provided our insights in the mini-reviews below. Read on for an unbiased opinion on the best sportsbooks in NC.
1. BetOnline – No.1 North Carolina Sports Betting Site With The Fastest Payouts
BetOnline suits both novice bettors and professional gamblers. Casual bettors will love the massive number of sports to bet on and helpful features like a prop builder and odds boosters. Pro bettors will find excellent value in the early lines offered with amazingly low margins and the addition of same game parlays.
We are also huge fans of BetOnline’s casino which has a whole section dedicated to poker. Here you’ll find poker tournaments, video poker games, and live poker games. They also stock plenty of slot games from developers such as Dragon Gaming and Nucleus Gaming. They’re services are available on the go and we rate their mobile site as a top real money casino app.
There are always numerous bonuses on offer at BetOnline and new players can pick up a 50% welcome bonus worth up to $1,000. With over 15 cryptocurrencies to use, you can see why 80% of BetOnline customers use a crypto token. Some traditional methods are available but they’re quite limited and expensive.
Welcome Bonus | Rollover Requirement | Minimum Deposit | Payout Time | Accepts US Players? |
50% up to $1,000 | 10x | $20 | Instant | Yes |
Pros:
- Bet on 35+ sports
- High bet limits
- Loads of bonuses
- Same day parlays
Cons:
- Expensive traditional methods
- Slow traditional withdrawals
2. Bovada – Over 30,000 Daily Market
Bovada is a highly trusted and well-regarded online sports betting platform. This bookmaker boasts more than 30 sports to bet on and typically offers great market coverage for even the smaller sports. A few handy and unique features like #whatsyawager and a prop builder ensure Bovada remains a well-rounded platform that both casual and experienced bettors can use.
Bovada offers a small welcome offer of 50% up to $250 but with only a 5x rollover, this is a bonus that first-time bettors have a good chance of clearing. The cashier is a serious let down though – there are only a few crypto options, card deposits are pricey, and the withdrawal options are very limited.
Sports Welcome Bonus | Rollover Requirement | Minimum Deposit | Payout Time | Accepts US Players? |
50% up to $250 | 5x | $20 | Instant | Yes |
Pros:
- Lots of betting tools
- 30+ sports
- Competitive odds
- Good niche coverage
Cons:
- Slow withdrawals
- Limited cashier section
3. BetNow – Extensive Player Prop Markets for US League Betting
BetNow isn’t the prettiest legal sports betting site, but it also doesn’t try to be. Function over style is clearly the goal at BetNow and there is plenty of function. Football is particularly well covered, and the NCAA bettors can wager upon spreads and totals. We uncovered plenty of player props for the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB.
You can choose from three different welcome offers too. You can choose from either a 50, 100 or 150% deposit bonus but you have to deposit using cryptocurrencies or Moneygram – which means bank and credit card users can’t claim a welcome offer. Besides cryptos, payouts can be received using CashMG, and bank transfers.
Sports Welcome Bonus | Rollover Requirement | Minimum Deposit | Payout Time | Accepts US Players? |
100% up to $500 or
150% up to $150 |
20x, or 8x | $20 | Instant | Yes |
Pros:
- Great live markets
- Excellent NFL coverage
- Simple interface
- Fixed odds racing
Cons:
- Poor bonus offering
- High traditional payment fees
4. Everygame – The first Sportsbook to hit the World Wide Web 25 Years Ago
Everygame is one of the oldest gambling platforms in the US having launched way back in 1996. Not as big as BetOnline and MyBookie, Everygame instead offers a more mixed variety of international sports alongside the typical US leagues. You can bet on rugby, cricket, and snooker when even the biggest North Carolina sports betting sites don’t.
The sports welcome offer at Everygame can be claimed three times too – that’s three chances to claim up to $50. We found the cashier department to be quite weak with only a small handful of cryptos and fees for traditional payment withdrawals.
Sports Welcome Bonus | Rollover Requirement | Minimum Deposit | Payout Time | Accepts US Players? |
100% up to $250 x3 | 8x | $25 | Instant | Yes |
Pros:
- Excellent soccer coverage
- Many niche sports
- Numerous bonuses
- Long proven history
Cons:
- Poor mobile layout
- Limited banking options
5. BetUS –Favourite American Sportsbook Bets With High Limits
BetUS is a legitimate sharp bookmaker with low juice lines that drop early and a history of paying out consistently successful high-limit bettors. On the surface, BetUS looks decidedly US-based, but we found a ton of coverage of international leagues – albeit with limited markets.
BetUS keeps bettors informed with tons of sports news, betting insights, and a few solid predictions along the way. The BetUS TV platform is free too. There are always multiple bonuses and they’re all quite focused on crypto deposits. A standard welcome offer worth up to $5,000 is available but a portion of the offer is based in the casino.
Sports Welcome Bonus | Rollover Requirement | Minimum Deposit | Payout Time | Accepts US Players? |
125% up to $5,000
(100% up to $2,500 – Sports) + (25% up to $625 – Casino) |

Pros:
- High bet limits
- Low margin odds
- Great racebook
- Betting insights
Cons:
- Slow crypto payouts
- Withdrawal fees
6. MyBookie – Best Betting Odds with up to $1,000 Welcome Bonus
MyBookie is a one of the best online sportsbooks and a top choice for casual bettors. A simple prop builder can help create lucrative parlays while a big and clear interface makes reading the odds a breeze. US leagues mostly take center stage at MyBookie, but the international coverage is rather good too. You can bet on international leagues but there are a few big ones missing.
You’ll be able to participate in tons of sports contests but there aren’t that many traditional bonuses. Although a MyBookie promo code can be used to claim a 50% sports welcome bonus of up to $1,000. Bettors can check from 10 cryptocurrencies, Moneygram, and bank cards for deposits, but traditional users will need to use a bank transfer for a payout.
Welcome Bonus | Rollover Requirement | Minimum Deposit | Payout Time | Accepts US Players? |
50% up to $1,000 | 10x | $50 | Instant | Yes |
Pros:
- Handy prop builder
- Great MLB lines
- Intuitive interface
- Multiple sports bonuses
Cons:
- Some weekly deposit limits
- Limited payout methods
7. BUSR – Racebook with Great Exotic Wager Types
BUSR started out as a racebook before developing into a complete gambling package. That’s why the racebook has a great selection of exotic wagers – including the elusive Pick 6 – and hundreds of racetracks. Live betting is well designed too with a large bet window and the responsive odds are easy to follow.
There’s a great welcome bonus for new players with up to $2,500 up for grabs. You’re looking at another crypto-dominant cashier section but bank cards and Moneygram are available for deposits. Bank transfers is the most popular payout method besides Bitcoin.
Sports Welcome Bonus | Rollover Requirement | Minimum Deposit | Payout Time | Accepts US Players? |
150% up to $2,500 | 10x | $100 | Instant | Yes |
Pros:
- Great exotic racing wagers
- Great live betting platform
- Loads of bonuses
- Fixed-odds racing
Cons:
- Poor withdrawal options
- Website can be sluggish
8. SportsBetting.ag – Live Streaming of Sports and Esports
SportsBetting.ag could use a little work on its presentation but this platform manages to fit a lot into a single betting window. The website requires a bit of exploration to find out where all the features and many of the markets are located – it’s worth it though as you’ll find niche events and boosted odds.
You won’t find a better Esports bookmaker too – the odds are exceptional and the live betting markets are supported by live streaming via Twitch. New players can claim up to $1,000 with the 50% Sports Welcome Bonus. Crypto users can rejoice as there are more than 15 tokens supported. Bank transfers, money orders, and checks all incur rather high fees.
Welcome Bonus | Rollover Requirement | Minimum Deposit | Payout Time | Accepts US Players? |
50% up to $1,000 | 10x | $55 | Instant | Yes |
Pros:
- Live streaming
- 15+ cryptocurrencies
- Odds boosters
- Great live Esports markets
Cons:
- Costly traditional fees
- Platform has a steep learning curve
9. XBet – Great User Interface with 50% Deposit Matched up to $500
XBet has made a name for itself as a great live betting platform. That’s because the site is so fast, responsive, and well-designed. The live betting section features large buttons to easily distinguish odds and the change of odds is perfectly clear. Those looking for interesting markets will find some US sports boast more than 250 prop bets for a single match.
The bonuses at XBet are far from the largest in the industry and the welcome offer will get you up to $500. XBet also boasts a good number of cryptocurrencies but suffers from limited withdrawal options which see non-crypto users relying on slow bank transfers for payouts.
Xbet also have a great casino offering too with a fantastic selection of table games. That’s not all though they have video poker, a live casino, blackjack tournaments, and social games you can play while interacting with others, it is one of the best Bitcoin casino sites in America.

- Fastest live betting

Users can perform transactions using fiat currencies, but Lucky Block is primarily aimed at crypto enthusiasts and, as such, allows for deposits and withdrawals using nine coins, including Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Ethereum, Soldano, and Dogecoin.
Though a newcomer to the sports betting industry, Lucky Block is easily one of the most stylized and well-rounded NC sportsbooks featured on this list. The sportsbook covers 30+ sports, with a huge selection of mobile sports wagering options available and deep in-play betting markets for all of the world’s most popular leagues, including the NFL, NBA, EPL, and MLB.

Is Sports Betting Legal in North Carolina?
Yes, sports betting is legal in North Carolina. Sports betting was authorized in 2019 when SB 154 was passed into law. Online sports betting legislation passed the house in June 2023, though applications from sites, combined with the setting up of regulations, mean the online sports betting industry in North Carolina will likely only begin in January 2024.
This means that residents who wish to bet on sports have two options for now. One is to head to one of only three legal retail sportsbooks in the state. The other option is to continue to bet at offshore sports betting sites such as BetOnline. These platforms are based overseas and are not bound by US federal or state law.
Technically, residents are not authorized to bet at these offshore sites but as they fall into a legal grey area, no individual player has ever been penalized for doing so.
Who can Legally Bet on Sports in North Carolina?
North Carolina residents must be at least 21 years of age to bet on sports. This goes for any of the state’s retail sportsbooks but also when registering for an account for offshore sports betting in North Carolina.
Secondly, bettors to bet online will also need to pass an identity verification process known as “Know Your Customer”. This requires some simple forms of ID such as a passport or driver’s license. Bettors will also need to prove their residence in NC which will require either a bank statement or a utility bill.
North Carolina Sports Betting Bills
Sports gambling in North Carolina is now legal in both a retail and online capacity. Retail sports betting was authorized in mid-2019, with online only being signed into law four years later in June, 2023. Here’s the detail on North Carolina’s legislative battle for sports betting:
2023
- HB 347: Submitted by Ashton Clemmons and Rep. Jason Saine. This bill sought to officially legalize online sports betting, allowing up to 12 online sports betting licenses. It indicated they would cost $1 million and tax sports betting at 14%. This is to apply to the operators’ gross wagering revenue, minus winnings and other expenses. This bill was signed by the North Carolina Governor on 14 June, 2023.
- SB 388: Submitted by Sen. Jim Burgin. This bill seeks to alter the tax structure to a Wager Excise Tax. The bill has been referred to the Committee on Rules and Operations of the Senate.
2021
- SB 38: Submitted by Sen. Perry. The bill sought to push through mobile sports betting, plus change definitions of certain permissible retail locations and other betting terms. The bill dies in committee.
- SB 688: Submitted by Sen. Perry and others. The bill, similar to SB 38, sought to legalize online sports betting. Due to a late amendment that proposed a ban on college wagering the bill dies in committee.
- HB 631: Submitted by Rep. Jason Saine and others. The bill is the house equivalent of SB 688. The bill dies in committee.
2019
- HB 929: Submitted by Rep. Warren and others. The bill looked at establishing a North Carolina Gaming Commission. The bill dies in committee, after being referred to the Committee on Rules, Calendar and Operations of the House.
- SB 154: Submitted by Sen. Davis and others. This is the bill that legalized retail sports betting in North Carolina. The bill permitted retail sports betting on tribal lands. It was signed into law by Governor Roy Cooper on 26 July, 2019 after winning a vote in the House by 90-27.
- SB 574: Submitted by Sens. Davis, Krawiec and Woodard. The bill sought to decide whether or not to establish a North Carolina Gaming Commission and study the status of sports betting. The study was conducted by the North Carolina State Lottery Commission and examined gaming activities prohibited and the feasibility of legalizing gaming activities, including sports betting and horse steeplechases. The bill was signed by the Governor on 4 September, 2019.
Tax on Gambling Winnings in North Carolina
Sports bet winnings in North Carolina are liable for tax. As standard, a retail sportsbook will withhold 24% of any winnings over $5,000. This is a federal tax, and the sportsbook should do this every time. On top of that, NC residents are subject to income tax – with the threshold determined by their earnings – and you are required to disclose income from gambling when you file your taxes.
Since offshore gambling isn’t strictly legal, it is a good idea to discuss your gambling winnings with a tax professional to determine how best to proceed.

North Carolina (NC) Betting Apps
Every one of the leading sportsbooks that have been showcased in this guide puts a huge amount of effort into having top-quality mobile platforms. While they don’t offer sports betting apps in North Carolina for users to download, they invest their time into optimizing their websites.
This does not mean that you’re missing out on anything at all, as the platforms are just as easy to navigate and you don’t have to waste any energy downloading an app.
BetOnline is the best all-around mobile sportsbook around today. It’s very user-friendly and you get access to a huge range of betting tools and markets. It leaves nothing to chance with what it brings to the table.
BetUS is another mobile sportsbook that makes sure to look after its mobile users. A stunning bonus awaits new signups, with the account creation process on a phone taking less than 60 seconds.
Finally, MyBookie has for many years been the destination for experienced mobile bettors. This is because it has a no-nonsense approach to its mobile platform, focusing purely on the betting and not getting side-tracked with anything else. The competitive odds and simple mobile betslip system are the cherries on top.
Payment Methods and Options
When sports betting in North Carolina at offshore operators, you will need to make real money deposits and request payouts. This means you’ll need to use secure and reliable payment methods to complete these transactions. North Carolina sports betting sites all support a range of payment options and identify them below.
Crypto Betting
Cryptocurrencies are the method that online North Carolina sports betting sites would prefer you use. This is not a bad thing because cryptocurrencies are reliable, incredibly secure, and incredibly fast. Deposits are instant and withdrawals can be received in as little as 24 hours – but never more than 72 hours.
Crypto sports betting sites supporting Bitcoin are the most popular, but you’ll notice these platforms also support other popular tokens including Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Cardano, and Dogecoin.
eWallet Betting
Once the most popular way to bank for online sports betting in North Carolina, eWallet’s are now a thing of the past at offshore sportsbooks. They have been replaced by vastly superior cryptocurrencies and you won’t find a single operator on our top list that still supports the likes of PayPal, Neteller, or Skrill.
Traditional Payment Methods
Some bettors won’t want to use cryptocurrencies. With eWallet’s no longer available, those bettors are left with a few traditional methods. Most notably card payments and bank transfers – although checks and Moneygram are still viable at some operators. Card payments are almost exclusively a deposit method now and you won’t find much acceptance as a withdrawal option.
Best Sportsbook Bonuses in North Carolina
Offshore NC sports betting sites feature lucrative bonuses and promotional offers that bettors can choose to take advantage of. These bonuses provide some form of free betting at the sportsbook, and it is possible to convert bonuses into real withdrawable cash. We identify and explain the most popular bonus types below.
Matched Deposit Bonuses
The matched deposit offer is the most common bonus type found at North Carolina sports betting sites. It is found in the welcome bonus and often as “reload” offer for existing customers. The concept is simple – the operator matches your real money deposit with bonus funds. For example, a 100% matched deposit of your $600 deposit would be an extra $600 in bonus funds.
No Deposit Bonuses
If you’re gambling in North Carolina, keep your eyes peeled for this rare bonus offer. As the name would suggest, it requires no real money deposit to claim the offer. The bonus can come in the form of a free bet or some bonus funds to be used in the sportsbook. Naturally, there is usually a winnings limitation or rollover applied to these bonuses.
Free Bets
A free bet is a wager in which the sportsbook covers the cost of the stake. What this means is you’ll lose no money if the bet loses but you’ll get some profit if it does. For example, a $10 free bet on a winning outcome at odds of +400 would payout $50 dollars. However, the $10 stake would be returned to the sportsbook, and you get the remaining $40 profit.
Popular Sports to Bet on in North Carolina

NFL teams in North Carolina:
- Carolina Panthers – Since joining the league in 1976, the Panthers have won two conference titles and made it to the Super Bowl in 2015.
