Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 The term social media can be interpreted in different ways depending on who you ask and more importantly, when you ask it. The average user views the various social media platforms as means to keep in touch with friends, family and co-workers. They share news, events and pictures; lots and lots of pictures. They will either have long drawn out conversations and discussions or simple “thumbs up”, “+1” and “favorite” to express their feelings. Let’s not forget the “shares” and the “retweets”. Each of these actions in their own way are forms of social interaction when it comes to the world of social media. We have seemed to have lost the social side of social media when we get to its use by businesses, nonprofits and politicians. Whether they are running their social media campaigns internally or have hired outside “professionals”; it is obvious that many focus more on the media/marketing side of social media than all else. More often than not on Facebook, at least, I have posted something on a page’s timeline or sent the page a private message only to never have it responded to or even viewed, in the case of a private message. A majority of my messages are either questions or compliments, so you would assume that the page administrator would jump on the chance to acknowledge a page fan’s attempt to have a social interaction. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case. A quick review of the posts made both prior and after mine, shows that my comment has not been singled out for non-response. Those that manage fan pages; whether they be for a business, community, nonprofit or a political organization, need to realize that once they remove the social from their social media campaigns all they are left with are digital billboards. Being social by nature, the last thing most humans want to interact with is a billboard. Those that do can usually be found standing in the middle of Times Square in NYC yelling at a legitimate digital billboard; and, even then, they usually have some other people around them joining in.
