Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 Wondering what social media lessons one would have learned from Kindergarten? Social media is ever changing. As businesses are advised to keep up with the latest trends in social media, or run the risk of becoming irrelevant. In this environment of constant change, there are some basics which form the crux and we learned those key principles way back in Kindergarten. 1. Play Nice When communicating through a social media platform, it is very important to always be pleasant and polite. “Please” and “thank you” goes a long way. No one likes a bully, in Kindergarten that was the bad kid! In social media it taints the image of your brand and results in loss of followers, connections and goodwill. 2. Be Yourself There are Millions of social media pages of brands from the same industry. How can your audiences tell you apart if you aren’t being authentic or copying others. You certainly don’t want to lose followers from trying to be something you’re not. People connect to real people, so if you want to leave a true impression, your profile picture should be of you. Unless you are posting on behalf of your entire company, your avatar picture then can be a logo of your brand as a sign of recognition. 3. Pay Attention Learning and growing is extremely imperative in social media. If you want to achieve better results, you can’t keep doing the same things you’ve always done. Check out your competitors, influencers and see what tactics they are using that is generating success and attention. Use that as your ultimate goal to beat, take away ideas and creatively spin them to implement in your social media strategy. 4. Ask for Help When we were children and needed help, we would go running and find for help and made sure we got our solutions! But as adults we are often too embarrassed or have pride to ask for help. There is always something new happening in social media, and rather than avoiding it or trying to experiment to figure it out, ask someone who knows – Industry Experts! Like Jeff Bullas, Heidi Cohen and Chris Brogan who share their valuable insights in their blog all at your disposal. 5. Have Fun Always have that attitude that anything new happening is a great opportunity to learn and grow. So don’t be stuck in a rut, adapt and grow with the changes and have fun along. The moment social media feels like a job it will even come across your work. When that happens, your updates can feel forced and stale, and that reflects on the quality of your posts. So don’t be afraid to have fun and keep experimenting!
