It has been a matter of discussion for a long time. What is your follow worth on social media? As business owners we are constantly trying to tabulate what a followers monetary value is. But what about the value of a voter?
PC Magazine answered some of these questions for us and assigned the monetary value we so desperately crave.
- Twitter Follower: $2.05 Facebook Like (Fan): $8
- Tweet: $5 Facebook Share: $14
- Cost per Follower: $2.50-$4.00 Cost per Like: $1.07
- Cost per Engagement: $0.75-$2.50 Can’t proactively engage
However, these numbers drastically change when you look at the value of a vote. A new tool is out that can tabulate the value of your social media presence to the Presidential nominee’s.
A Independent woman in New Mexico with more than 100 friends who vote is worth $38
vs.
Same woman who primarily votes along party lines is worth $30
If you are a man the value goes down to $35 and $28 respectively.
President Obama has 21,611,395 followers on Twitter and 31,662,761 fans on Facebook. This gives us a total of 53,274,111 fan/followers on social media.
Mitt Romney has 1,652,576 followers on Twitter and 11,687,384 fans on Facebook. This gives us a total of 1,333,960 fan/followers on social media
If the value of the average voter is $30, then Obama’s social media is worth $1,598,223,330 and Romney’s is $40,018,800. Meaning President Obama’s social media value is $1,558,204,530 more than Mitt Romney’s.
Obama has spent $352 million on ads vs. Romeny’s $455 million, according to NBC.
The total spending of $807 million cost of a social media follow/fan $0.07 collectively. If you value the fans per campaign and what each candidate has spent then, Obama’s fan value is: $0.15 and Romey’s fan value: $0.002
Obama fans cost : $6.61/follower and Romeny fans cost: $341.09/follower
The President’s long term investment in social media is showing a significant ROI with a cost difference of $334.48 between the two.
If we add in spending totals for 2008 ($240 million) then Obama has spent $11.11 per follower, though still does not level the playing field in cost/follower between the 2 candidates.
In short Obama has paid 37% the value of a fan (based on $30 fan cost) and Romeny has paid 1137% the value.
Despite a large discrepancy in the value/spent ratio between the two candidates, the investment may well be worth it as sources are saying that social media may again play a huge roll in determining who wins this election.
