When it comes to the video game industry two big players come to mind: Xbox and PlayStation. We could debate on which system has the best games or the best features, but we’re much more interested in which one is winning in social. To find out, we’ve put them head-to-head in this week’s Social Media Face Off.

In order to compare the brands on social, we set up search streams for each brand in the uberVU platform. We’ve compared the results from the past two weeks to determine our winner.

Get your thumbs ready. Let’s see which video game system has the best moves in social.

Round One: Mentions

Xbox makes an impressive start, pulling in 1,311,124 mentions. That’s more than double the 587,964 mentions of PlayStation.

Winner: Xbox

Round Two: Conversation Mapping

In round two we’ll dive deeper into the mentions of Xbox and PlayStation and find out what social is talking about in relation to each brand. Each brand’s conversation map contains phrases one might expect for chatter about video games and consoles with “video”, “play”, “controller”, “games” and “console” all appearing. The bad news for PlayStation is that “Xbox” appears on its conversation map. But the good news is “PS4”, “PS3” and “PlayStation” appear on the Xbox map. Looks like PlayStation is top of mind for social when it comes to discussing Xbox—point scored for PlayStation.

Round Three: Engagement

It’s all tied up heading into round three. Let’s see which brand will take home the prize by determining which is driving the most engagement across Twitter and Facebook by comparing how many times mentions of each were RTed, Liked and Shared. PlayStation scores a point with Likes, but Xbox doubles PlayStation’s efforts in both RTs and Shares which wins the round.
